Belfast, 1971: Gary (O'Connell) is a young British soldier who, on his first night patrol, gets separated from his unit and finds himself wandering the backstreets. O'Connell is marvellous as the luckless soldier but the complex power-play between the IRA, loyalist paramilitaries and the British Army make for more than just a thriller.

The first and best of the series – and one of the best of all slasher movies. Escaped psycho Michael Myers returns to the town where he killed his sister several years before and picks up where he left off with remarkable ease. Pleasence is the obsessive psychiatrist on his trail, convinced he is to blame for the escape. A scary reminder of what a blood-soaked genre could achieve if only it recovered from sequelitis.

'Madagascar' opens with steak-loving lion Alex enjoying his pampered existence in New York's Central Zoo. His friends, Marty the zebra (Rock), Gloria the hippo (Smith) and Melman the hypochondriac giraffe (Schwimmer) discover that the crafty penguins are planning a breakout, and set off for Africa to re-connect with their inner animals. But interaction with a tribe of lemurs uncovers the bitter truth about Alex's carnivorous nature. Thoroughly enjoyable, blackly comic DreamWorks animation musical.

Alex (Stiller), Marty (Rock), Melman (Schwimmer) and Gloria (Pinkett Smith) are pining for New York so they escape across Europe, only to find animal-hating Captain DuBois (McDormand) on their tails. Easily the best family film of 2012 so far, it’s a superb return to form after the lacklustre Madagascar 2: Escape 2 Africa.

Alex the lion (voiced by Stiller), Gloria the hippo (Smith), Melman the giraffe (Schwimmer) and Marty the zebra (Rock) are put on an flight back to their zoo home, only to crash land in Africa. The going native theme is expanded, with good-time fascist lemur (Cohen) getting the best lines and the penguins the best laughs. With clever riffs and unexpected poetry, this is a welcome prospect.

When perky aeroplane Dusty (Cook) is forced to give up racing, he decides to retrain as a firefighter under crusty-but-fair Blade Ranger (Harris). Gannaway's sequel is better than the dismal original, but even as simple-minded entertainment it's a pity about the sexual and racial stereotyping and broad, male-orientated humour.

1930s America: Newlyweds Serena (Lawrence) and George (Cooper) are equal partners in his logging company, but then tragedy strikes. Strong female characters are to be welcomed, but we shouldn't need to be loudly and frequently reminded how strong they are. Despite the stars' chemistry and an accomplished director, it collapses under its own weight.
