  • Directed by: Arthur Penn
  • Written by: David Newman, Robert Benton, Special Consultant:, Robert Towne
  • Cast: Warren Beatty, Faye Dunaway, Michael J Pollard, Gene Hackman, Estelle Parsons

This stylish and gritty account of the relationship and activities of two self-publicised bank robbers was a late-1960s milestone in making extreme screen violence curiously fashionable. Great performances from Hackman and Dunaway, a genuine sense of the thrill involved in their nefarious activities, and telling period detail make this one of Penn's best.

When a team of Korean paramilitaries take the US President (Eckhart) hostage, it's up to disgraced security chief Mike Banning (Butler) to stage a rescue attempt. In its certainty about good guys and bad guys it has a certain nostalgic seduction, but it's basically derivative, cheesy and fantastically unconvincing.

When ex-Starfleet commander John Harrison (Cumberbatch) attacks Earth, the Enterprise crew pursues him. It's more of the same: funny, dramatic and exciting, and if it's not as fresh as the 2009 film, Pine and Quinto's squabbling bromance gives it heart, Pegg and Urban are excellent and Cumberbatch is thrillingly cold.

John Hodge's screenplay perfectly captures the desperate humour of Irvine Welsh's novel, keeping the episodic structure of junkie scenes for the first half before concentrating on Renton in London in the later stages. Fast and stylish direction, with a creative soundtrack and acting that's off-the-rails excellent, this cinematic blast from beginning to end shows a complex – and true – understanding of the lure and fatal consequences of drug-taking.
