  • Directed by: Graham Annable, Anthony Stacchi
  • Cast: Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan

Eggs (Hempstead-Wright) lives underground with a family of Boxtrolls, marginalised creatures who make their home from rubbish. But then the trolls are hunted by a group of exterminators, led by the grotesque Snatcher (Kingsley). Adventurous, intense and sometimes disturbing animated movie, with plenty to keep adults occupied; whether kids will respond is another question.

  • Cast: Brenton Thwaites, Jeff Bridges, Meryl Streep

In a bland, conformist future, one person – the Giver (Bridges) – retains the collective memory of a time before conformity, and it's time for a replacement (Thwaites). Despite good work from Bridges and Streep, it's odd that a story which prizes individuality should make for such a formulaic teen movie.

When space adventurer Peter Quill (Pratt) finds himself sharing a prison cell with assassin Gamora (Saldana), genetically-modified bounty-hunting raccoon Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and other crims, they must face power-hungry evildoer Ronan (Pace). With a gag-stuffed script, lively direction and outstanding performances, this adaptation of an obscure Marvel comic is enormous fun.

If I Stay

If I Stay

  • 2014

  • Directed by: RJ Cutler
  • Cast: Chloë Grace Moretz, Mireille Enos, Jamie Blackley

When young cellist Mia (Moretz) and her family are involved in a car accident, she finds her spirit self wondering whether her life is worth returning to. An interesting premise spoiled by an almost comically soft-focus tragedy-lite approach and a screenplay that swarms with clichés.

  • Cast: Jake Johnson, Damon Wayans Jr, Rob Riggle

Ryan (Johnson) and Justin (Wayans) are two loser flatmates who decide to pretend to be LAPD officers, only to fall foul of psychopathic criminal Mossi (D'Arcy). Some good ideas and the leads' comic chemistry are let down by uncertain writing, misguided directorial choices and sloppy editing, but it's amiable enough.

Lucy (Johansson) is forced to be a drug mule by crime boss Mr Jang (Choi), but when the drugs leak into her system, she acquires superhuman powers. Insane and largely humourless but ambitious and entertaining action flick, and it's satisfying to see a formidably intelligent and physically ferocious female at the centre.

Happily married Annie (Diaz) and Jay (Segel) try to spice up their sex life by recording it on his iPad, but an accidental sync sends the film to several other devices; charmless slapstick ensues, with an interesting premise spoiled by a fumbled and decidedly old-fashioned treatment.

Think Like a Man Too

Think Like a Man Too

  • 106 min

  • Directed by: Tim Story
  • Cast: Kevin Hart, Gabrielle Union, Wendi McLendon-Covey

The characters from the 2012 travel to Las Vegas for a wedding, where low-rent Hangover-style shenanigans ensue. Much of the energy comes from pint-sized motormouth Hart, who as best man Cedric has most of the (few) laughs; ultimately there are just too many characters, but at least it's shorter than the first movie.

  • Cast: Liam Neeson, Dan Stevens, David Harbour

Drug dealer Kenny Kristo (Stevens)'s wife has been kidnapped, with unfortunate consequences, and he hires alcoholic private eye Matt Scudder (Neeson) to find out who did it. Unintentionally amusing adaptation of Lawrence Block's novel, with a half-hearted performance from Neeson and hackneyed dialogue; an absurd mix of deadly serious thriller and Cop and a Half-style buddy movie.
