Dumping the childhood chapters of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Fukunaga does a great job here of making the action and emotions of a well-worn story feel modern without removing it from its original context. Playing to the gothic aspects of the book (and the tastes of the Twilight generation) Wasikowska is otherworldly in the titular role, but a devilish Fassbender steals the show as Mr Rochester.
