Swinton is in ferociously good form as the titular 40-year-old drunk, a woman whose flamboyant attitude is increasingly no disguise for her loneliness. Unable to hold down a job, and on the verge of alienating her sole friend, recovering alcoholic Mitch (Rubinek), the desperate Julia agrees to participate in a kidnapping. This grim character study gives way to become a blackly funny crime caper/road movie.
