Part one of Soderbergh's structurally magnificent 'film diptych' about Che Guevara (Del Toro) unfolds in a non-linear fashion. This biopic details his life as a collection of incidents rather than a coherent whole with three events are used to highlight Che's philosophy - his initial meeting with Fidel Castro; the fighting in the Sierra Maestra mountain regions; and his controversial 1964 speech to the United Nations.
