Watch: Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton on Disney+

Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton to stream on Disney+ in July

'Wait for it' no longer as the original Broadway production hits the streaming site this summer

As the lockdown grinds on, the great Disney overlords and Lin-Manuel Miranda have announced that they will be bringing forward the premiere date for the film version of Miranda's musical Hamilton. Originally set for a theatrical release in October 2021, the film – which features the original Broadway cast – is now available to stream on Disney+.

Rightly considered a cultural phenomenon, Hamilton recounts the tale of America's foundation through the life of Alexander Hamilton, one of the country's founding fathers. Hailed for its searing hip hop score and casting of non-white performers, Hamilton won 11 awards at the 2016 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, as well as the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Nationwide tours across the US, and a run at London's Victoria Palace Theatre, quickly sold out.

The film version is directed by Thomas Kail – who also directed Miranda's other hit Broadway musical In the Heights – and promises to push the envelope in the art of 'live capture', allowing viewers to experience a truly immersive and intimate stage experience from their own home. Hamilton will feature Miranda himself playing the role of the eponymous hero, Phillipa Soo as Eliza Hamilton, Renée Elise Goldsberry as Angelica Schuyler and Leslie Odom, Jr. as Aaron Burr.

'I'm so proud of how beautifully Tommy Kail has brought 'Hamilton' to the screen. He's given everyone who watches this film the best seat in the house,' says Lin-Manuel Miranda. 'I'm so grateful to Disney and Disney+ for reimagining and moving up our release to July 4th weekend of this year, in light of the world turning upside down. I'm so grateful to all the fans who asked for this, and I'm so glad that we're able to make it happen. I'm so proud of this show. I can't wait for you to see it.'

Watch Hamilton from Fri 3 Jul on disneyplus.com.
