David Fincher's much-admired Mank is out in front as the Oscar nominations are announced

Gary Oldman and Amanda Seyfried in Mank

Mank

Nomadland, Minari, The Trial of the Chicago 7, Judas and the Black Messiah, The Father and Sound of Metal also feature heavily

The hype surrounding the biggest global celebration of film certainly feels less pronounced this year, with fewer big names starring in or helming prestige titles. Although partially a consequence of Covid disruption to the release schedule (alongside a renewed diversity push), throwing the Oscars open to lesser-known and more varied voices has resulted in a more exciting and perhaps more worthy list. It might not feel quite as radical after the shock of the totally transformed BAFTA film awards selections last week, though the nominations announced today still feel like progress.

Leading the pack is what could be viewed as a more traditional Oscar pick, David Fincher's admittedly superb Mank – about the making of Citizen Kane – with an impressive 10 nods. However, looking further down the list to some of the next most nominated films – Nomadland, Minari, Sound of Metal and Judas and the Black Messiah, all with six – and things start to get very interesting, these are films that foreground marginalised or neglected groups, while Promising Young Woman, a colourful subversion of the rape-revenge flick, receives five nominations.

Judas and the Black Messiah

The Best Director category features two women this year (Nomadland's Chloé Zhao and Promising Young Woman's British director Emerald Fennell), the first time in history there's been more than one. After the debacle of 2020 when just one actor of colour (Cynthia Erivo for Harriet) was nominated, nine join the race this year, including Britain's Riz Ahmed and Daniel Kaluuya, for Sound of Metal and Judas and the Black Messiah respectively. Other British interest includes Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman, nominated as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress for their work in The Father (which is up for six awards), Sacha Baron Cohen featuring in the Best Supporting Actor pack for Aaron Sorkin's heavily-nominated The Trial of the Chicago 7 and, in Best Actress, Promising Young Woman's Carey Mulligan will compete against Vanessa Kirby for Pieces of a Woman.

The 93rd Academy Awards will take place on Sun 25 Apr.
