Jeff Keen aka Dr Gaz is Britain's answer to American underground cinema legends Stan Brakhage, Kenneth Anger and Andy Warhol. Born in 1923, the Brighton-based Keen started making films in the late 1950s and has to date made upwards of 50 wildly experimental shorts. Forty-five of them have been restored, remastered and collected in this excellent four-disc DVD/three-disc Blu-ray set which, along with a programme of the films ready to tour UK cinemas, should give this criminally underexposed filmmaker the wider attention he deserves. That said, Keen's films aren't for everyone. Inspired by his experiences as a soldier during World War II and by B-movie and comic book pop culture and utilising live action, animation, multiple screens and sonic soundtracks, these are wonderful but challenging films. 'It went right over my head and seemed a little threatening,' former enfant terrible Ken Russell said of Marvo Movie, included herein. That’s reccomendation enough. Extras: new interview with Keen, documentaries, 96-page booklet.
