Gun Crazy (PG) 87min ●●●●● Joseph H Lewis’ thrilling 1950 B feature re-released. See feature. Filmhouse, Edinburgh, Fri 3–Thu 9 Apr.

Dragonball: Evolution (PG) 83min ● Puerile Hollywood film version of the Japanese manga phenomenon. This cheap-looking children’s sci-fi directed by Final Destination guy James Wong will disappoint fans and newcomers alike. Justin Chatwin, Chow Yun-fat and Asian-American actors Joon Park and Jamie Chung star. General release from Wed 8 Apr.

17 Again (PG) 102min ●●● Better than you might expect age reversal comedy in which a now frustrated and middle-aged former teenage pregnancy dad (Matthew Perry) gets another chance when he is transformed back to his 17-year-old self (Zac Efron). Director Burr Igby Goes Down Steers’ intelligent direction and Jason Filardi’s decent screenplay helps avoid many of the usual pitfalls. General release from Fri 10 Apr.

Fast & Furious (15) 107min ●● This is actually The Fast and the Furious 4 but it’s the first one that Vin Diesel has agreed to be in since the original because the screenplay met with his approval (must have been good then). Actually this is just an upgrade of the original film with almost the same plot and cast and a higher budget. This is more of a rebirth than a sequel – hence the new abbreviated title. Stars Diesel and Paul Walker’s acting prowess does, however, seem to have improved in the intervening years. General release from Fri 10 Apr.

The 400 Blows (PG) 100min ●●●●● François Truffaut’s delightful 1959 debut in a lovely new print, the first of a series of films about Parisian rapscallion Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud). The best film showing anywhere this fortnight. Filmhouse, Edinburgh, Fri 10–Thu 23 Apr.

An upgrade of the original film with almost the same plot and cast plus a higher budget. This is more of a rebirth than a sequel - hence the new abbreviated title. As such it's every bit as thrilling, dumb and occasionally dull as the original.
