Crank 2: High Voltage (18) 95min ●●● Picking up where Crank ended, Chev Chelios (Jason Statham) is kidnapped by a gang of Chinese medics who attempt to remove his organs. They get as far as replacing his heart with a temporary electronic one before he wakes up and kicks ass. Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor’s exemplary return to exploitation cinema continues unabated in this superior sequel. General release from Thu 16 Apr.
Not Easily Broken (PG) 99min ●● Conservative relationship drama from African-American actor/filmmaker Bill Duke. Morris Chestnut and Taraji P Henson star as an estranged couple who attempt to find happiness with others only to realise what they are missing. Duke and screenwriter Brian Bird fail to capitalise on some interesting ethical dilemmas. General release from Fri 17 Apr.
In Search of Beethoven (12A) 138min ●●● In Search of Mozart director Phil Grabsky takes on the deaf German composer in an illuminating documentary. Filmhouse, Edinburgh, Fri 17–Mon 20 Apr.
From Russia with Love (PG) 114min ●●●● Beautiful clothes, beautiful women, gypsies, mad Russians and Robert Shaw with a bleached crop, great fun. Selected release from Fri 24 Apr.
Observe and Report (15) 86min ●●● Seth Rogen’s comedy is a misjudged character study of a delusional shopping mall security officer. Writer and director Jody Hill can’t quite get the balance right between some dark material and Rogen’s jovial Canadian everyman persona. Still there’s plenty to enjoy in this distinctive fusion of Taxi Driver and The Big Lebowski. General release from Fri 24 Apr.
