Jan Dunn’s The Calling

Jan Dunn’s The Calling

Don’t miss the matinee only release of Kent based writer/director Jan Dunn’s third film. A polemical, social realist filmmaker, Dunn’s previous films Gypo and Ruby Blue dealt with racism and paedophilia hysteria in working class communities, respectively. With The Calling Dunn turns her attention to religion. This engrossing, beautifully acted and solidly written chamber (or should that be cloistered) drama is more melodramatic and less improvisational than Dunn’s previous work, but that’s no bad thing. Dunn is undoubtedly a British talent to watch. The excellent cast includes Brenda Blethyn, Emily Beecham, Rita Tushingham, Susannah York and Amanda Donohoe.

Cameo, Edinburgh from Fri 14-Thu 20 May (matinees only).
