Beowulf the belle of Comic-Con

  • 27 July 2007

The preview night of the San Diego Comic-Con was all about Robert Zemeckis’ adaptation of Beowulf. The director terrified children across the globe with his CGI over live action animation technique in Polar Express but using the same system for Beowulf has brought stunning results. Reports from Comic-Con speak of a visual splendour which left the assembled throng breathless. A trailer that recently popped up online gives a fairly good idea of just how impressive the near photo-realistic animation really is. For the uninitiated, the movie features Angelina Jolie, Anthony Hopkins, John Malkovich, Robin Wright Penn and Ray Winstone. All but Ray Winstone are rendered in the most spectacular CG tones - sadly Winstone as Beowulf has the voice but not the physique, instead represented by Aaron Stephens. Beowulf is in cinemas in November and promises to be a 300 for the Old English-speaking classes.
