On the Road trailer unveiled

Jack Kerouac's road novel adapted for the screen by Walter Salles, starring Sam Riley

The trailer for Walter Salles' On the Road has been unveiled, featuring Sam Riley, Garrett Hedlund and Kristen Stewart. The original novel was written by Jack Kerouac, and is seen as a definitive text for the beat generation of artists and writers who rose to prominence in America in the 1950s.

Director Salles has had previous period adaptation success with Che Guevara's The Motorcycle Diaries in 2004. Riley, who takes on the role of narrator Salvatore 'Sal' Paradiso (a stand-in for Kerouac himself), has also distinguished himself recently in the remake of Graham Greene's Brighton Rock and Ian Curtis biopic Control.

The trailer also features appearances from Kirsten Dunst and Viggo Mortensen, as well as a brief glimpse of the jazz culture that Kerouac and his contemporaries were fixated upon.

On the Road is due for release on Fri 21 Sep.
