Little Miss Sunshine directors re-team for Ruby Sparks - trailer

The film features performances from Paul Dano, Elliot Gould and Steve Coogan

Directing partners Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris are re-uniting with Little Miss Sunshine star Paul Dano for new movie, Ruby Sparks. In it, Dano plays Calvin, an author who somehow manages to create his latest protagonist in real life. The supporting cast includes Elliot Gould, Steve Coogan, Annette Bening and Antonio Banderas, as well as less well-kent faces such as Arrested Development's Alia Shawkat, The Daily Show's Aasif Mandvi and Zoe Kazan (who also wrote the film) as the eponymous Ruby.

The plot bears some similarities to that of Stranger Than Fiction, in which author Emma Thompson's fictional protagonist (Will Ferrell) exists in real life. (Ferrell is guided through his travails by English professor Dustin Hoffman, also echoed in Ruby by Elliot Gould's therapist). There are shades of 1980s geek comedy Weird Science as well, in which two nerds generate their perfect woman (Kelly LeBrock, natch).

Ruby Sparks gets a US release on Wed 25 Jul - when we hear of a UK release date, we'll let you know.

Calvin (Dano) is a writer who's been blocked since a phenomenal success in his teens. Desperate, he begins to write about an ideal woman, Ruby Sparks (Kazan), who proceeds to manifest herself in the real world. Despite occasional rockiness it's endearing, tender and clever, with outstanding performances from the leads.
