What we said, and they said, about Ridley Scott's return to the Alien universe

Review of Reviews - Prometheus

What we said
‘For all its newness, Prometheus feels oddly second hand. Inescapably, the film operates as a set of such discrete moments, rather than a fully-realised narrative.’ The List

They said

[Ridley] Scott steadily allows the tension to build, always aware that expectations aroused by a return to the original Alien must be satisfied but not repeated. Prometheus is a strongly acted, superbly designed movie, an exciting and at times emetic experience.’ Observer

‘It’s slick, gorgeously designed and scattered with intriguing concepts. But there’s just no real power behind it. Prometheus will make for a perfectly entertaining night at the movies – but we were promised so much more.’ Time Out

‘While it lacks Alien’s ferocious simplicity and focus, Scott’s determination to see his often loopy ideas through gives his film a single-minded vigour rarely found in pictures of this scale.’ Telegraph

‘For all its big ideas it’s not quite as revelatory as one might have hoped. That might prevent it from being an instant classic, but for its duration, Prometheus is immensely satisfying.’ Scotsman

Out now on general release.

In the definitely-not-a-prequel-to- Alien, a spaceship's crew investigates what appears to be an alien vessel. Despite a largely effective cast and stratospheric technical values the plot is murky and the tone is inconsistent, as if the creators are no wiser than the audience about what it all adds up to.
