What we said and what they said about Ben Affleck's third directorial effort

We said:
'There are some terrific performances, though if anything irritates, it's the rather 'Hollywood ending' that takes quite a few liberties with actual events. A shame, because until this final reel, this is one truly taut experience.'
The List

They said:
'This is pitched as a patriotic, Hollywood-saves-the-day yarn, a juicy slab of dangling Oscar bait. But there's a danger that its chest-beating could drown out the strength in its subtleties.'
The Guardian

'The film makes a beautiful job of juggling laughs and real drama.'

'White-knuckle tense and less self-congratulatory than it sounds, Ben Affleck's unexpectedly comedic third feature has the vital elements to delight adult audiences.

On general release now.

When Islamist militants take the US Embassy staff hostage in 1979, six escape to the Canadian Embassy, where the CIA plans an extremely odd rescue. The craziness of the real-life story inspires the oddball mix of political thriller and showbiz satire, and Affleck directs with taut authenticity.
