Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival 2012 programme revealed

Dave MacLeod

Now in its tenth year, Edinburgh Mountain Film Festival has long established itself as a must for lovers of the great outdoors, with this year’s jam-packed programme likely to entice more than 3000 enthusiasts through its doors. As always, the line-up boasts talks, films and events for all ages, with highlights this year including lectures by alpinist, climber, BASE-jumper and adventurer Leo Houlding; superman Alan Hinkes, the only British mountaineer to have scaled all 14 of the world’s 8000m mountains; Simon Willis waxing lyrical on sea kayaking; as well as an appearance from Norwegian polar explorer Børge Ousland.

Film, as the title suggests, is to the fore, with a programme promising to show the sporting potential of the great outdoors, in all its glory. Look out for the first public screening in Edinburgh of Scottish climber Dave MacLeod in The Long Hope; the high-altitude film Cold, with its frightening footage of the aftermath of a major avalanche; and the jaw-dropping antics of ‘Sketchy Andy’. Other highlights of the film strand include Smitten, about BASE-jumper ‘Lucky Chance’, as well as footage of him carrying out his 100th jump. We’re exhausted just thinking about it.

George Square Lecture Theatre, Edinburgh, on Fri 26–Sun 28 Oct, see emff.co.uk for more.
