Toronto prize win for director Cronenberg
David Cronenberg has won the People’s Choice Award at the Toronto Film Festival for his latest film Eastern Promises.
The Canadian director is now thought to be firmly in the running for an Oscar at next year’s ceremony, with his London-based Russian gangster drama well received by critics.
Naomi Watts and Viggo Mortensen star in the film, which will open at the London Film Festival next month.
Toronto Film Festival director Piers Handling said of the award: “It’s great that it’s a Canadian film by one of our monsters.”
