Top 5 superhero romances

Warning: may contain spoilers!

In the latest installment of Marvel's Iron Man, Pepper Pots (Gwyneth Paltrow) gets the chance to ‘suit up’ and fight by her man’s side. It’s one of the many unlikely scenarios that might arise from dating a superhuman, and it's the sort of thing that's sure to put a strain on any relationship. While Pots and Stark seem able to (ahem) iron out their issues, not all superheroes are as lucky in love. Here are five relationships where sparks certainly flew, if not always in a romantic sense.

The Incredible Hulk and Betty Ross

The tale of Betty Ross and Bruce Banner is a romantic tragedy even Shakespeare would have struggled to concoct. He was a simple scientist, experimenting with gamma rays that ultimately caused him to turn into an almighty beast when he’s angry. She was in love with said scientist, even though her father was hell bent on destroying him. Through various twists and turns, Ross went from Banner’s wife to a she-Hulk designed to put the green machine out of commission, all of this with some bigamy to boot. Love hurts, especially when your fists are the size of boulders.

Superman and Lori Lemaris

While Lois Lane is the most famous of Clark Kent’s ‘close acquaintances’, Lori Lemaris is unquestionably his most bizarre. It all started out innocent enough, with wheelchair-bound Lemaris catching Kent’s eye during their time at Metropolis University. The two fell in love but Kent couldn’t understand why his new love always sped off just before 8pm, or the omnipresent blanket over her legs. Following her home one night, he discovered that she is a mermaid from Atlantis. After a quick moral and scientific assessment, our hero decided that she was not his catch of the day.

The Joker and Harley Quinn

Apparently, behind every good man is a good woman. Well, behind every psychotic criminal mastermind it would seem there is a manically besotted woman. Dr Harleen Quinzel MD was interning at Arkham Asylum when she fell for ultimate bad boy The Joker. She eventually turned insane, donning a jester’s outfit so she could match her man’s attire. Don’t you just hate couples who do that?

Wolverine and Marico Yashida

Wolverine and Marico Yashida

This particular love story would read like a dodgy mob periodical were it not for the adamantium skeletons and telepathic mutants. Wolverine, having fallen hard for Yakuza boss's daughter Yashida, was manipulated by her father into assassinations, poisoning and honour fights. Wolverine eventually defeated Yashida’s father in a fight so that he could marry the criminal heiress, only for her to abandon the wedding to fulfil her father’s legacy.

Batman and Talia Al Ghul

Batman and Talia Al Ghul

These two had the potential to be the most powerful couple on earth, were it not for Batman’s meddling morals. Daughter of Batman’s former mentor (and nemesis) Ra's Al Ghul, Talia both loved and hated Batman in equal measure. She offered him immortality and her complete devotion at one point. He declines in favour of a life of standing on rooftops at night and grunting incomprehensibly.
