30 Days of Night (15) 112min ••• In an isolated Alaskan town, which is plunged into darkness for one month every year, bloodthirsty vampires start appearing to feed on the town’s residents. Local Sheriff Eben (Josh Hartnett), his estranged wife Stella (Melissa George) and a group of survivors must do anything they can to last until daylight. Impressively scary adaptation of Steve Niles’ graphic novel series. General release from Thu 1 Nov.
Man of the Year (12A) 115min •• Robin Williams reunites with writer/director Barry Levinson (Good Morning Vietnam, Toys) for this embarrassing political thriller/romantic comedy about a talk show host who suddenly decides to run for president. A great conceit gives way to sentiment, lame jokes and sloppily executed comedy set pieces. General release from Fri 2 Nov.
Lions For Lambs (15) 91min ••• Admirable in its critical stance on the US administration’s war on terror, and shot through with an appropriate sense of urgency, this political drama directed by Robert Redford and scripted by Matthew Carnahan (who, somewhat bafflingly, also wrote the hideously gung-ho actioner The Kingdom) doesn’t quite match its intent with cinematic craftsmanship. General release from Fri 9 Nov.
Silk (12A) 110min •• Big screen adaptation of Alessandro Baricco’s bestselling novel about silk production, marriage and adultery in 19th century France and Japan. This is lushly shot but is ultimately an epic bore with Keira Knightley and Michael Pitt as the dull couple at the centre of the maelstrom. General release from Fri 9 Nov.
Saawariya (PG) tbcmin •• Lame big budget Bollywood romancer musical. The film is of interest only because it is the first of its kind to be distributed by Sony. General release from Fri 9 Nov.
