The Star Trek star is joined by Kevin Costner, Keira Knightley and director Kenneth Branagh
The trailer has just landed for Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, with Chris Pine the latest actor to assume the title character. Shadow Recruit picks up with Ryan when he switches from being a government analyst to an operative and, judging by the stunts on hand in this footage, he has his hands full almost immediately.
Harrison Ford is the actor most readily associated with Jack Ryan, for his roles in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger (Alec Baldwin was played second fiddle to Sean Connery in The Hunt for Red October, while the less said about The Sum of All Fears starring Ben Affleck, the better). It's Ford who Pine will most likely be measured against, but going on current evidence, he's more than up to the task, having already brought a Han Solo-esque cocksure wit to Captain Kirk in the Star Trek reboot and its sequel. The rest of the cast fit well with Pine's sci-fi credentials: Kevin Costner is arriving hot off the back of his role as Clark Kent's dad in Man of Steel, while Kenneth Branagh has chosen Shadow Recruit as his first post-Thor outing. Keira Knightley also pops up in her first action-flavoured role since the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, as Pine's love interest – and possibly something more...
The trailer is likely to pick up a little extra attention for its reference to Tom Clancy, who passed away a few days ago. The espionage author was responsible for the creation of Ryan, although this instalment – intended to be a franchise reboot – will be the first Jack Ryan film not explicitly based on one of his novels.
Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit is scheduled for release on Thu 26 Dec 2013.
