Baghdad to host international film festival
- 13 November 2007
An international film festival is to be hosted in Baghdad next month - the first event of its kind since 2005.
Although going to the cinema was a favourite pastime for Iraqi families during the 70s and 80s, the first Gulf War saw the decline of theatres due to economic instability.
Cinemas were also burned to the ground following the 2003 conflict.
The Al-Mansour hotel, which hosted a festival of short films two years ago, will not be used for the event after a suicide bomber killed 12 people there this summer.
The three-day event, organised by the Association of Iraqi Filmmakers Without Borders, will accept movies from Egypt, Jordan and Iran.
The festival kicks off on 16 December.
