Domhnall Gleeson, Chris O'Dowd and Aidan Gillan also star in the Catholic-themed drama

An impressive cast of Emerald Isle talent has been assembled for the new trailer for Calvary, which debuted today. Brendan Gleeson, Domhnall Gleeson, Aidan Gillan, Chris O'Dowd and Dylan Moran (who first alerted us to the project in an interview earlier this year) all crop up in the darkly comic thriller, which is written and directed by John Michael McDonagh (who previously directed Gleeson in The Guard).

The plot looks like an intriguing affair, with Gleeson's 'good priest' Father James Lavelle anonymously threatened with death during a confession – because 'there's no point in killing a bad priest – but killing a good one? That'd be a shock'. As well as dealing with the thorny issue of Ireland's relationship with Catholicism, the film looks to have a few moments of levity thrown in: when first confronted with the death threat, Lavelle's dry response is, 'Certainly a startling opening line.'

Calvary is set for release on Fri 11 Apr 2014. So, a week or so before Easter then.

Father James (Gleeson) is a priest, but a good one; wise, witty, kind, non-judgmental. Then he's told that he's to be killed to atone for the sins of his church. McDonagh's film features exceptional performances from a great cast, and a witty and powerful script, far more thoughtful than 2011's lacklustre The Guard.
