Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Trailer Leaks Online

Trailer for Warner Bros' prestige picture leaked online in the form of what appears to be cameraphone footage

It would take a man with nerves of steel to release a film trailer mere hours after THAT one made its debut. Unfortunately for Warner Bros, someone seems to have concealed their cameraphone at a secret screening of the trailer for next year's Zack Snyder superhero clash.

Accompanied by Portuguese subtitles, it's an ominous, portentous and rather pretentious affair, all darkness and rain and full of Inception horn.

Compared with the trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, the contrast could hardly be greater. Whereas JJ Abrams' sneak peak made generation Xers around the world weep with nostalgic joy, from the (admittedly scant) evidence here it looks like Snyder has learned little from the ambivalent attitude that received his previous film, 2013's po-faced Man of Steel.

While much of the success of Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy is undoubtedly down to its predominantly serious tone, Superman seems much harder to get right. Bryan Singer abandoned his beloved X-Men franchise to make Superman Returns, a film in which the eponymous hero spent most of the time being nagged by his ex. And Man of Steel was a joyless, workmanlike reboot culminating with Kal-El and General Zod punching each other for half an hour.

Trailers for superhero films don't have to drown themselves in darkness to attract an audience, as Guardians of the Galaxy definitively proved. That said, Batman's glowing eyes do look cool.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is released 6 May 2016

Superman (Cavill) faces off against Batman (Affleck) in the aftermath of the near-destruction of Metropolis at the end of Man of Steel. Despite a pretty strong screenplay, the two leads are no more than functional and Wonder Woman (Gadot) is a damp squib. But if the film lacks Marvel's sense of fun, in its fidgety and…
