Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer breakdown

The force looks strong in the first Star Wars spin-off film

The first trailer has been released for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Set just before the original film, it features Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso (such a Star Wars name) who embarks on a dangerous mission to steal the plans for the original Death Star. Spoiler alert: as the opening of A New Hope attests, they will succeed.

Just how many of them make it back alive, however, remains to be seen. And, as previously teased, Rogue One looks grittier and grimier than previous adventures. Erso doesn't appear to be a straight-laced hero and much is made of her rebellious nature ('This is a rebellion, isn't it?'). We also get a glimpse of a sinister-looking Ben Mendelsohn in Imperial garb, Forest Whitaker as a (probable) good guy, black-clad Stormtroopers and a character in a dark cloak (Vader?) bowing before a column of light which just happens to be flanked by the Emperor's own guards.

There's plenty of classic Star Wars iconography on display, from the costumes (Stormtroopers, Scout Troopers, Imperial Guards) to the vehicles (AT-ATs and Star Destroyers). Also spotted is the legendary Mon Mothma – alas we won't learn the fate of her legendary Bothan spies as their mission was to retrieve details of the second Death Star.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is out on Fri 16 Dec.

Troublemaker Jyn Erso (Jones) and Rebel intelligence officer Cassian Andor (Luna) lead a rag crew across the galaxy to make contact with Death Star chief engineer Galen (Mikkelsen), Jyn's dad. This is Star Wars from the trenches, with sensational battle scenes and great performances from Jones and Luna.
