Raiders of the Lost Ark with live orchestral score coming to Edinburgh film festival

EIFF and RSNO return to the legendary Williams–Spielberg team for event cinema inspiration

Edinburgh International Film Festival returns to cinemas in Auld Reekie in four months, and has today revealed its first major highlight: a third team-up with Royal Scottish National Orchestra, this time for a live presentation of John Williams' score to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The EIFF has turned to the alluring Williams-Spielberg combo for the second year in a row, following 2016's ET: the Extra-terrestrial event.

Raiders of the Lost Ark Live takes place Sat 24 Jun, at 7.30pm at Usher Hall, and the announcement marks the start of a new three-year partnership between EIFF and RSNO, with events taking place all year round. Hardly surprising, given how ridiculously popular these performances are: ET and Back to the Future in 2015 sold out fast, so consider yourself warned. Tickets go on sale Thu 2 Mar at 10am via Usher Hall.

'We are delighted to continue and build on our relationship with the RSNO for this wonderful film and music collaboration,' said Mark Adams, EIFF Artistic Director. 'Indiana Jones is undoubtedly one of cinema's greatest heroes and it will be exciting to see this wonderful, rollercoaster adventure up on the big screen accompanied by the RSNO's orchestra.'

RSNO Chief Executive Dr Krishna Thiagarajan added: 'It makes absolute sense for us to continue and strengthen our association with EIFF. From the phenomenal success of our first EIFF performance two years ago with Back to the Future, we knew we were on to something special. The RSNO has pedigree in the field of music for films, recording and performing numerous soundtracks over the years, and to lend our expertise to one of the world's notable celebrations of contemporary and classic cinema whilst broadening the audience for live orchestral music presents a most complementary cultural partnership.'

It's hard to complain about a live rendition of such a classic score as this one, but it would be great to see a new composer featured in 2018 and 2019. It's also worth noting that a fifth Indiana Jones movie is slated for possible release in 2019, a mere 38 years after the original.
