Dad's Army

Dad's Army
  • 2015
  • UK
  • 60 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Oliver Parker
  • Written by: David Croft, Hamish McColl, Jimmy Perry
  • Cast: Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Bill Paterson, Blake Harrison, Tom Courtenay, Daniel Mays, Catherine Zeta-Jones

The Home Guard of Walmington-on-Sea find a German spy in their midst – don't panic, indeed. Faithful but strangely pointless recreation of the classic sitcom, in which fine actors like Jones, Nighy, Gambon etc only succeed in being inferior imitations of the originals. Like the characters themselves, brave but ultimately foolhardy.

  • Written by: Rhett Reese, Paul Wernick
  • Cast: Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano, Ed Skrein

Cynical crook Wade Wilson (Reynolds) undergoes an experimental procedure to transform him into a superhero, but emerges as the scarred and revenge-bent Deadpool. The emphasis on knowing humour is a bit obnoxious but it's a lot of fun, and Reynolds, with his likeability and swagger, was born to play the title role.

  • Written by: John Phillips
  • Cast: Robert De Niro, Zac Efron, Zoey Deutch

Recently widowed (and aptly-named) Dick (De Niro) collars his straight-arrow grandson Jason (Efron) to drive him to Florida so he can get laid. Cruel, lazily scripted and spineless effort from British director Mazer, which tries and fails to redeem its relentlessly crass gags with an unconvincing sweet-natured ending.

  • Directed by: Rob Letterman
  • Written by: Darren Lemke, Scott Alexander, Larry Karaszewski, R Stine
  • Cast: Jack Black, Amy Ryan, Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush,

Teenager Zach (Minnette) develops a crush on his home-schooled neighbour Hannah (Rush), whose mysterious father (Black) keeps her locked up. This greatest-hits adaptation of RL Stine's horror stories unleashing a host of fan-favourite monsters instead of focusing on just one; it's pacey and enjoyable with Black on fine comic form, and the teen trio are likeable.

  • Cast: Luke Bracey, Ray Winstone, Edgar Ramirez

Adrenaline junkie Johnny (Bracey) joins the FBI and is put on the trail of the Robin Hood-ish Bodhi (Ramirez) and his gang of stunt-performing merry men. Pointless remake of Bigelow's fondly-remembered 1991 original, with neither subtext nor characterisation, and stunts that resemble adverts for energy drinks.

  • Directed by: Alejandro González Iñárritu
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Leonardo DiCaprio, Will Poulter

Hugh Glass (DiCaprio) is a fur trapper and frontiersman who, after being attacked by a bear, is left for dead by colleage John Fitzgerald (Hardy). An audacious, immersive and highly accomplished tale of how true grit can overcome pure hell, with excellent performances, especially from DiCaprio.

  • Written by: Greg Coolidge, Phil Hay, Matt Manfredi
  • Cast: Olivia Munn, Kevin Hart, Ice Cube

Surly Atlanta cop James (Cube) takes his bumbling soon-to-be brother-in-law Ben to Miami on the trail of drug dealers. Munn is appealing as a no-nonsense cop but it's all painfully lazy and complacent, and not nearly as funny as it thinks it is.

Creed

Creed

  • Directed by: Ryan Coogler
  • Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, Tessa Thompson

Adonis (Jordan) is the illegitimate son of deceased boxing legend Apollo Creed, who acquires a coach and father figure in the shape of Rocky Balboa (oh come on, you know who). Coogler injects heart, wit and personality into a stirring revival, with beautifully choreographed fights and real poignancy.

  • Directed by: Tom McCarthy
  • Cast: Rachel McAdams, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton

McCarthy's tale of how the Boston Globe's investigation team unearthed cases of sexual abuse and cover-ups within the Catholic church is up there with All the President's Men, with a fine cast (Keaton, McAdams, Ruffalo, Tucci) serving a nuanced, complex script: no one, except the victims, is entirely blameless. Remarkable.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens
  • 2015
  • US
  • 136 min

  • Directed by: JJ Abrams
  • Written by: Lawrence Kasdan, J.J. Abrams, Michael Arndt
  • Cast: John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, Max von Sydow, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, Kenny Baker

From the ashes of the Empire, the villainous First Order rises up to destroy Luke Skywalker (Hamill) – but where is he? Fans can rejoice: Episode VII is sensational and surprisingly emotional, with a finely-crafted script and effects that never overpower the performances. Star Wars is back in a big way.
