Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • 2015
  • US
  • 141 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Joss Whedon
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Samuel L. Jackson

Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark (Downey Jr) to keep the peace, goes rogue and decides to kill off the Avengers. Barely logical but impressively entertaining superhero fun; Johansson and Olsen are central to the action and Whedon's script is strong, snappy and irreverent, but it doesn't have much emotional impact.

Cinderella

Cinderella

  • U
  • Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
  • Cast: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Stellan Skarsgård, Nonso Anozie, Derek Jacobi, Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin

Cinderella (James) loses her parents and is left with stepmother Lady Tremaine (Blanchett) and cruel stepsisters (McShera and Grainger); but soon enough, she's off to the ball. Weitz's crafty script has enough surreal touches to keep you interested and the result, while hardly a new take on the story, is still a pleasant surprise.

  • Cast: Jean Dujardin, Gilles Lellouche, Céline Sallette

Pierre Michel (Dujardin) is a driven Marseilles magistrate who sets out with the support of local police to catch drug kingpin 'Tany' Zampa (Lellouche). Despite an eclectic soundtrack of 70s and 80s pop and Djuardin's winning performance, there are no surprises here and it rarely shows the depth to support its challenging length.

Danny (Pacino) is an ageing rocker, still pumping out his old hits on tour, who receives a letter of advice written to him years earlier by John Lennon, but never sent, causing him to re-evaluate his life. Pacino is likeable as the shambolic, self-centred Danny.

  • Written by: George Miller, Brendan McCarthy, Nico Lathouris
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Abbey Lee, Riley Keough, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley

Reluctant hero Max (Hardy) is drawn into helping Imperator Furiosa (Theron, excellent), who's liberated a group of sexually enslaved women and is being pursued for her trouble by the grotesque Immortan Joe (Keays-Byrne). Precision-executed lunacy, a brilliantly feminist 'western on wheels' with a generous helping of heart.

  • Directed by: Ben Palmer

  • Cast: Lake Bell, Simon Pegg, Henry Lloyd-Hughes

Cynical thirtysomething journalist Nancy (Bell, nailing an English accent) accidentally steals someone else's blind date, Jack (Pegg) and ends up falling for him. Although it's poorly-plotted and sometimes crude, the very likeable Bell makes the dialogue crackle and Pegg is more engaging than he's been in a long time.

The Moomins holiday in the South of France and fall in love with casino gambling and ritzy boutiques – all except for Moominmamma (Oberman), who heads for the beach. The elegant hand-drawn animation is a pleasure, although the casual pacing might not appeal to kids weaned on breathless action. A nostalgic treat.

Pitch Perfect 2

  • Cast: Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Adam DeVine, Kelley Jakle, Chrissie Fit, Hailee Steinfeld, Katey Sagal, Elizabeth Banks

After a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction at the White House, the Barden Bellas attempt to get their groove back in a Eurovision-like song contest. Despite highlights such as Lee's brilliantly weird performance as Lilly, the knowing charm of the original is diluted and Wilson's schtick, in particular, is starting to grate.

Eric (Rockwell) and Amy (DeWitt), three kids in tow, move into a new house in a typical American movie suburb, and strange things start happening. Likeable performances (including Harris as a TV ghostbuster) can't rescue this remake of the Spielberg/Hooper 1982 original from being not very terrifying or thrilling.

An LA Search & Rescue pilot's ex-wife and her new man take his daughter to San Francisco. Meanwhile, in another part of the film, science guys are acting worried. Disaster movie! Johnson is great company, the supporting cast is fun and although the timing of the release is unfortunate, it's tremendously entertaining earthquake-based tosh.

Funny, exciting and genuinely ambitious spy spoof with an appealing performance from McCarthy, and Byrne exceptional as the arrogant villainess. Hugely likable.
