  • Written by: Andrew Baldwin
  • Cast: Idris Elba, Richard Madden, Kelly Reilly

Sean Briar (Elba) is a tough CIA agent who uncovers a bomb plot in Paris. Frenetic thriller which comes across like Elba's audition for 007; the France terror attacks of November 2015 make it seem ill-timed but it's fast, furious and (sometimes unintentionally) funny.

When world leaders demand that the Avengers operate under UN supervision, the team splits. If you haven't seen previous instalments it will make no sense, but if you have, all the plot points bear bittersweet fruit, in a brilliant combination of hectic action and one liners with intimate, heartbreaking moments.

New York investment banker Davis (Gyllenhaal) starts behaving erratically after the death of his wife in a car crash, but then he becomes friends with customer service operator Karen (Watts). Earnest but trite look at bereavement with a clichéd script and uniformly overwrought performances.

When a military operation to bring in a radicalised Englishwoman turns into a planned drone strike, commanding officer Katherine Powell (Mirren) and her colleagues have to juggle military necessity with saving civilian lives. Nerve-shredding and thought-provoking against-the-clock thriller which probes the moral grey areas of drone warfare.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book

  • Directed by: Jon Favreau
  • Written by: Justin Marks (screenplay), Rudyard Kipling
  • Cast: Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken

You know the story: boy (Sethi) left in woods, adopted by wolves (Nyong'o and Esposito), mentored by panther (Kingsley), befriended by bear (Murray), hunted by tiger (Elba, terrifying). Favreau and his team successfully retool the story with stunning CGI, and a script with heart, soul and spirit. A feelgood delight.
