  • Written by: Mark Herman
  • Cast: Pete Postlethwaite, Tara Fitzgerald, Ewan McGregor, Stephen Tompkinson

When the local pit is due to be closed down, it's the end of the day for the colliery brass band as well, even though they've got a chance at winning the national competition. Politics is at the heart of this story, but writer-director Herman has created a film that balances nicely between pithy humour and heartbreaking poignancy. The ensemble cast is excellent.

  • Directed by: Tim Burton
  • Cast: Johnny Depp, Winona Ryder, Dianne Wiest, Anthony Michael Hall, Kathy Baker, Vincent Price, Alan Arkin

Burton follows up the excesses of Batman with this fairy tale for the 90s, which works as a welcome return to the darker side of the genre. Depp is the unfinished creation of The Inventor (Price), who lives alone in a crumbling mansion, unable to even scratch his nose without needing stitches. Discovered by a friendly Avon lady, his talent for coiffure and topiary makes him a neighbourhood favourite until tragedy strikes. Beautifully shot, tenderly acted and full of hidden depths.

  • Cast: Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, Kate McKinnon

Physicist Erin (Wiig) finds herself teaming up with estranged high school pal Abby (McCarthy) and her eccentric engineer Jillian (McKinnon) in search of ghosts. Marred only by excessive reverence for the original, it's a spirited, funny and touching reboot which sticks two fingers up at sexist trolls.

In this sequel to the 2004 original, Supers are still forbidden but Elastigirl (Hunter) gets to go up against a supervillain while husband Bob (Nelson) minds the kids. It looks great and the voice cast is excellent, but it feels dated and the set-pieces become tiring.

In the run-down industrial north, a young boy learns some harsh lessons about life from the fate of his pet bird. Classic piece of British realism which showed that Loach's television work could transfer to the big screen. A very humane sense of humour leavens a tale of some desolation.
