Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip

Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip
  • 2015
  • US
  • 86 min

  • Directed by: Walt Becker
  • Written by: Ross Bagdasarian, Janice Karman, Randi Mayem Singer
  • Cast: Jason Lee, Justin Long, Matthew Gray Gubler, Jesse McCartney, Bella Thorne, Kimberly Williams-Paisley, Tony Hale

The three squeaky-voiced vermin hit the road on a mission to stop their owner Dave (Lee) from proposing. A passing reference to John Waters' 1972 cult classic Pink Flamingos, which features an infamous excrement-eating scene, highlights the extent to which this film serves pretty much the same substance to the viewer.

Florence Foster Jenkins (Streep) is a wealthy, cultured New York socialite, who insists on performing as a soprano in spite of a total inability to sing. Streep throws herself endearingly into the role, Grant is wonderful as her debonair husband and Frears keeps a confident balance of uproarious laughs and genuine pathos.

Teenager Zach (Minnette) develops a crush on his home-schooled neighbour Hannah (Rush), whose mysterious father (Black) keeps her locked up. This greatest-hits adaptation of RL Stine's horror stories unleashing a host of fan-favourite monsters instead of focusing on just one; it's pacey and enjoyable with Black on fine comic form, and the teen trio are likeable.

Joy

Joy

  • Directed by: David O Russell
  • Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Robert De Niro

Joy Mangano (Lawrence) is a young mother coping with her dysfunctional family; the story traces her invention and development of the Miracle Mop. Russell's screwball drama never really finds its tone and although Lawrence is probably too young, she plays Joy with gusto; only now and again does it rise to the heights of Russell's earlier work.

The Jungle Book

The Jungle Book
  • 2016

  • 106 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Jon Favreau
  • Written by: Justin Marks (screenplay), Rudyard Kipling
  • Cast: Neel Sethi, Bill Murray, Ben Kingsley, Idris Elba, Scarlett Johansson, Christopher Walken

You know the story: boy (Sethi) left in woods, adopted by wolves (Nyong'o and Esposito), mentored by panther (Kingsley), befriended by bear (Murray), hunted by tiger (Elba, terrifying). Favreau and his team successfully retool the story with stunning CGI, and a script with heart, soul and spirit. A feelgood delight.

In this forgettable animation, Robinson Crusoe (Lowenthal) lives on a desert island where his enemies are…two evil cats. A lacklustre script and dull storytelling make this one not worth taking the family to.

Trailblazing rabbit Judy (Goodwin) goes to the city to join the police, and teams up with con artist fox Nick (Bateman) on the trail of a missing otter. Cheerfully feminist but never preachy, with gorgeous animation and a classy cast, it's a model piece of family entertainment.
