Christopher Robin

  • Directed by: Marc Forster
  • Cast: Hayley Atwell, Ewan McGregor, Jim Cummings

Christopher Robin (McGregor) is a workaholic who neglects his family, until he re-encounters his childhood toys. Whimsical and unoriginal back-to-childhood tale, not saved by McGregor’s dexterity or Cummings’s lovely voice work as Pooh.

  • Cast: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh

When Chinese-American college professor Rachel (Wu) meets the family of boyfriend Nick (Golding), she discovers that they’re incredibly rich. A fairly stale star-crossed lovers’ story is refreshed by a cast of East Asian stars and entertaining local colour.

Edie

Edie
  • 2017
  • UK
  • 1h 37min

  • Directed by: Simon Hunter
  • Cast: Sheila Hancock, Kevin Guthrie, Paul Brannigan

Edie (Hancock) was trapped in a loveless marriage for years, so when her husband dies, the 85-year-old takes advantage of her new freedom to go mountain-climbing in the Scottish Highlands. There’s charming chemistry between Hancock and co-star Guthrie, and the film is not unaware of how unprepared Edie is; unashamedly feel-good if somewhat formulaic.

The House with a Clock in its Walls

The House with a Clock in its Walls

  • 1h 44min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Eli Roth
  • Cast: Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Owen Vaccaro

Lewis (Vaccaro) is an orphan sent to live with his mysterious uncle Jonathan (Black). Roth takes a break from gore to turn this children’s book into family fare, and it’s atmospheric, but lacks charm; still, Black is great casting and the themes of grief and bravery are handled well.

Luis and the Aliens

  • Directed by: Christoph Lauenstein, Wolfgang Lauenstein
  • Cast: Callum Maloney, Dermot Magennis, Ian Coppinger

Luis (Maloney) is an 11-year-old boy obsessed with aliens, who gets visited by some shape-changing extra-terrestrial blobs. It has an attractive sheen and likeable characters, but the tone is uncertain and it’s too derivative and unsure of itself to win many admirers.

The Nun

The Nun

  • Directed by: Corin Hardy
  • Cast: Bonnie Aarons, Taissa Farmiga, Charlotte Hope

Two Vatican investigators and a local (Bichir, Farmiga and Bloquet) arrive at a cloistered Romanian abbey in 1952 to investigate a nun’s suicide. The latest in the Conjuring series is the weakest, with Aarons playing nun demon Valak to the hilt but ultimately let down by overstated shocks and erratic plotting.

  • 1h 50min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Gary Ross
  • Cast: Sandra Bullock, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Mindy Kaling, Sarah Paulson, Awkwafina, Rihanna, Helena Bonham Carter

Debbie Ocean (Bullock) sets in motion a plan to swipe a precious diamond necklace, and with pal Lou (Blanchett) puts together a gang of female crooks. The performances are great fun but Ross’s anonymous direction doesn’t add much, and it’s a bit let down by a needless subplot and unnecessary cameos.

A Simple Favour
  • 2018

  • Directed by: Paul Feig
  • Cast: Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Henry Golding

Stephanie (Kendrick), a mild-mannered suburban mom, tries to track down her friend Emily (Lively) after she mysteriously disappears. A twisty tale of murder, scheming and scams with excellent work from the two leads and the rest of the cast; a deliciously outrageous cocktail of a movie.
