Four high school teens in detention discover the magical board game Jumanji, now a video game, and after being sucked into it they become the avatars they’ve chosen. Crude but amusing sequel to the 1995 original, with Black having a ball as he gets in touch with his inner prom queen.

The Man Who Invented Christmas

The Man Who Invented Christmas

  • Cast: Dan Stevens, Christopher Plummer, Jonathan Pryce, Simon Callow, Donald Sumpter, Miriam Margolyes, Morfydd Clark, Justin Edwards, Ian McNeice, Bill Paterson

Charles Dickens (Stevens), down on his luck, is in desperate need of a hit when Ebenezer Scrooge (Plummer) pops into his head and starts offering pointers. Decent if occasionally twee adaptation of Les Standiford’s non-fiction book, with Stevens being sympathetic and energetic and Plummer clearly relishing a chance to do Scrooge.

Paddington 2

Paddington 2
  • 2017
  • UK/France

  • PG
  • Directed by: Paul King
  • Cast: Ben Whishaw, Hugh Grant, Brendan Gleeson, Hugh Bonneville, Sally Hawkins, Julie Walters, Jim Broadbent, Peter Capaldi, Madeleine Harris, Samuel Joslin, Imelda Staunton

Paddington (Whishaw) falls foul of a dastardly scheme to steal the key to a hidden fortune. The sequel to the wildly successful first film is implausibly even better, with spiffing action pieces, seemingly throwaway gags paying rich dividends later, and splendid performances from all, with Grant brilliant as the has-been thespian villain. Joyful stuff.

The Star

The Star

  • Cast: Steven Yeun, Kristin Chenoweth, Zachary Levi

A story of the New Testament Nativity told from the perspective of the animals. Dry and bland, but an over-qualified voice cast helps, and there are enough celebrity cameos to give parents a way to pass the time. And as animated bible stories go, at least it’s shorter than Prince of Egypt.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Star Wars: The Last Jedi

  • US
  • 2h 32min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Rian Johnson
  • Cast: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Benicio del Toro, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran

Rey (Ridley) meets Luke (Hamill) to learn all about the Force. Johnson expands on the casualties-of-war theme, making magnificent, roaring action sequences and leading the viewer through a blood-stained moral labyrinth. Driver returns with a vengeance, Dern is terrific and it hits the sweet spot between nostalgia and gripping storytelling.
