  • Cast: Isabelle Huppert, Christian Berkel, Anne Consigny

Michele (Huppert) is a successful, middle-aged video games producer who, when raped by a violent intruder, doesn't report the assault but behaves as though nothing has happened. Verhoeven's dark character drama features an astonishing, multi-layered central performance from Huppert and its treatment of sexual violence is challenging and audacious.

  • Cast: Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Bradley Whitford

Chris (Kaluuya) heads to upstate New York with his girlfriend Rose (Williams), for a dinner with her supposedly liberal parents (Whitford and Keener), only to find that things are very much other than they seem. Peele’s deep understanding of horror movies tropes combines with his own experiences as a black American, to make a sharp, taut and precisely crafted reflection on racial tensions in America.

The true story of the African-American women who provided NASA with important mathematical data needed to launch its first successful space missions, despite institutionalised segregation in the workplace. The leads are wonderful and it’s an inspiring story about collective triumph.

The true story of Saroo Brierley, who aged five is separated from his mother and family in India, declared lost and adopted by an Australian couple, only to track his family down years later using Google Earth. Hugely emotional, remarkably assured debut from Davis, with fine performances.

The true story of the Amazonian expeditions of British army officer Percy Fawcett (Hunnam), which inspired Conan Doyle’s The Lost World. Despite good work from Hunnam, Miller as Percy’s plucky wife and Pattinson as his loyal sidekick, it’s a languorous and sometimes confusing story which sometimes becomes The Lost City of Zzzzz.

The story of a young black man growing up, struggling with his sexuality and neglected by his drug-addicted mother. Astutely judged and beautifully humane sophomore feature from Jenkins, with sublime work from the three actors playing the main character (Hibbert, Sanders, Rhodes) and fine support from Ali, Harris and Monáe. Terrific.

Maureen (Stewart) is an American in Paris, coming to terms with the death of her twin brother while working in the titular position for her demanding celebrity boss (von Waldstätten). An awkward fusion of ghost story, celebrity culture satire and de Palma-style thriller; Stewart's nervy, edgy performance almost but not quite keeps it on track. Intriguing but incoherent.
