Alice Through the Looking Glass

Alice Through the Looking Glass
  • 2016
  • US
  • 113 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: James Bobin
  • Cast: Mia Wasikowsksa, Johnny Depp, Helena Bonham Carter, Sacha Baron Cohen

Alice (Wasikowska) has to travel back in time to help the Mad Hatter (Depp), to the annoyance of Time (Baron Cohen). Nimble blockbuster with a good blend of mirth and melancholy, and director Bobin never lets the CGI swamp the story in the way Burton did in the first film.

Red (Sudeikis), a notably angry bird, joins an anger management class and makes some friends, but then green pigs arrive in the neighbourhood. Amusing if delayed adaptation of the smartphone game, with plenty of gags and puns for accompanying adults.

Soccer mom Amy (Kunis), thwarted by the controlling PTA, befriends repressed Kiki (Bell) and outrageous Carla (Hahn). Rude, crude and raucous but nevertheless rather pleasing feelgood froth, championing bad behaviour as a solution to social repression.

  • Directed by: Steven Spielberg
  • Written by: Roald Dahl (novel), Melissa Mathison (screenplay)
  • Cast: Mark Rylance, Ruby Barnhill, Bill Hader, Rebecca Hall

Eight year old Sophie (Barnhill) looks out her window one evening to discover something terrifying – the Big Friendly Giant (Rylance), who unlike his giant brothers doesn't actually want to eat her. Magical, funny and surprising stuff from Spielberg, lacking only some of the menace of Dahl's original, but genuinely heartwarming.

Jason Bourne

Jason Bourne

  • 12A
  • Directed by: Paul Greengrass
  • Cast: Matt Damon, Alicia Vikander, Julia Stiles

Jason Bourne (Damon) is back with a vengeance, literally this time, as information about the death of his father leads him to go up against CIA Director Dewey (Jones) and new nemesis Heather Lee (Vikander). Stonking action, high stakes, amazing chases, Damon is sensational: the perfect 'soft reboot'.

David Brent: Life on the Road

Life on the Road

  • UK
  • 96 min

  • Directed by: Ricky Gervais
  • Written by: Ricky Gervais
  • Cast: Ricky Gervais, Doc Brown, Andy Burrows, Rebecca Gethings

David Brent (Gervais) takes unpaid leave to pursue rock stardom with his band Foregone Conclusion. The skin-crawling songs are worth the price of admission, although the comedy feels crueller than before, and after a brilliant start and amusing middle, the film dissolves into cheap sentiment.

Gods of Egypt
  • 2016
  • US
  • 127 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Alex Proyas
  • Cast: Gerard Butler, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Bryan Brown

In an alternative world where the gods walk the earth, Egyptian gods Set (Butler) battles Horus (Coster-Waldau) and tears out his eyes – whereupon Horus wants revenge. Extremely silly blockbuster with racially insensitive casting (not an Egyptian among them), but the mixture of lofty ambition, hokey dialogue and barrel-scraping comedy makes for bags of so-bad-it's-good enjoyment.

Sophie (Bello), a woman with a history of mental health issues, finds herself stalked by an entity that only comes out when the lights are turned off. Skilfully-made if bleak debut by Swedish writer-director, with convincing work from Bello and some grippingly tense sequences.

Forest ranger Grace (Howard) discovers orphaned Pete (Fegley), who has lived in the woods for six years with a mysterious dragon named Elliott. Lowery uses old-school charm and a sense of place to make a genial fable of grief and growth pains; one of the best kids' movies of the summer.

In 2040, the sole survivor of a Purge killing is now a US senator (Mitchell) running for President, and she and her head of security find themselves out in the streets on Purge night. Exciting, brutal and dumb in equal measures, although it runs out of steam in its final act.

Suicide Squad

  • 123 min

  • Directed by: David Ayer
  • Cast: Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood, Cara Delevingne

A group of incarcerated supervillains is recruited to undertake dangerous missions. The result is so conventional, it's twee: Deadshot (Smith) just wants to be a good dad, Diablo (Hernandez) spends the whole film moping and Harley Quinn (Robbie)'s idea of bad behaviour is breaking a window. With unconvincing effects and cliché-ridden dialogue, it's plain awful.
