Captain Marvel
  • 2019
  • US
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
  • Cast: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Kazinsky

Danvers (Larson) is a fighter with the Kree Starforce who finds herself on Earth, and encountering Agent Nick Fury (Jackson). The storyline doesn’t give Larson a lot of time to establish a persona, but her charm, style and ass-kicking make her Marvel’s coolest customer and whatever it lacks in heart, it makes up for with sheer likeability.

Dragged Across Concrete

  • 2018
  • USA
  • 2h 39min

  • Directed by: S Craig Zahler
  • Cast: Mel Gibson, Vince Vaughn, Laurie Holden, Tory Kittles

Henry (Kittles) is an ex-con who finds himself in conflict with disgraced lawmen Ridgeman (Gibson) and Lurasetti (Vaughn). It’s an epic grindhouse thriller with multiple exploding craniums but Gibson is on his best form for years, and Zahler will one day make a classic in the Don Siegel vain, even if this patchy but compelling number isn’t quite it.

Dumbo
  • 2019

  • 1h 52min

  • Directed by: Tim Burton
  • Cast: Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin

In this remake of the 1941 film, one-armed circus worker Holt (Farrell) is struggling to reconnect with his bereft children while a certain large-eared pachyderm is figuring out the ropes. It looks lovely, but there’s a lot of extra plot shovelled in and it’s arguably overloaded, compared to the sincerity and simplicity of the original.

Frances (Moretz) is a young waitress trying to make her way in New York, whose life changes when she returns a found handbag to its owner, Greta (Huppert). A stalker thriller with full commitment from the leads, but littered with plot holes; a nightmarish fantasy which falls apart if you think about it.

  • Cast: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Kit Harington, Justin Rupple, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, F. Murray Abraham, Gerard Butler

Hiccup (voiced by Baruchel) is now a chief with growing responsibilities, while Toothless the dragon is in love; but then dragon hunter Grimmel (Abraham) is determined to spoil people’s fun. The franchise is running out of steam; there’s too much going on and the central bond is obscured.

Jordan Sanders (Hall) is a bullying boss and former science geek who wakes up as a teenager (Martin). Not all of the one-liners succeed, but the writers have a lot of fun and Martin, who also produces, is a charming force of nature as the successful businesswoman in a 13-year-old’s body. A riotous love letter to black girl magic.

Michael Banks (Whishaw) is facing ruin after the death of his wife, and his sister Jane (Mortimer) can’t help—but then Mary Poppins (Blunt) sails down from the sky. Blunt is suitably brusque and radiant and a fine songstress, and while it’s a sliver of a story it’s impressively imaginative and unashamedly, triumphantly nostalgic.

Louis (Clarke) takes his wife Rachel (Seimetz) and two children from Boston and settles in Maine, in a property that includes a spooky pet cemetery. The second adaptation of Stephen King’s novel has panache and escalates to a grim and grisly finale. Laurence is particularly good as the daughter, Ellie.

  • Directed by: Jordan Peele
  • Cast: Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Anna Diop

Adelaide (Nyong’o) and Gabe (Duke) arrive at their holiday home with their children, only to be confronted by a mysteriously familiar foursome. Peele’s follow up to Get Out is a neat twist on the home invasion story, with beautifully executed set pieces, and Nyong’o is phenomenal as both protagonist and chief aggressor. Fresh and arresting.

  • Cast: Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Jesse Plemons, Sam Rockwell

The rise of Dick Cheney (Bale), from electrical worker in Wisconsin to US vice-president, presented as cheeky, dark, inventive comedy. Bale gives a compelling, shape-shifting performance and Adams as his ambitious wife Lynne is scintillating, as are Carell and Rockwell. A super-smart and disconcerting history lesson.

What Men Want

What Men Want

  • Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Max Greenfield

Ali (Henson) is a sports agent who can suddenly understand the thoughts of her male co-workers. It fails to make the most of the battle of the sexes premise, becoming a predictable rom-com, but Henson gives an impressively physical performance and Badu has fun as the wacky psychic who starts the whole debacle.

June (Mali and Denski) is faced with being shipped off to math camp while her mother (Garner) seeks medical assistance; then she finds herself in a parallel universe where she has to save a theme park. An animated film with big ideas and some notable omissions, ultimately a slight but rewardingly bittersweet experience.
