Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame
  • 2019
  • US
  • 3h 1min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Benedict Cumberbatch, Don Cheadle, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Dave Bautista, Zoe Saldana

Five years after Thanos’s victory, the Avengers are in despair until Ant-Man (Rudd) kicks the story back into action. The final film in the saga verges on fanservice, but there’s intelligent character development, everyone (except Johansson) is given enough to do, and some arcs have a truly poignant sense of closure. Playful, inventive and highly entertaining.

Captain Marvel

Captain Marvel
  • 2019
  • US
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
  • Cast: Brie Larson, Samuel L. Jackson, Jude Law, Gemma Chan, Ben Mendelsohn, Robert Kazinsky

Danvers (Larson) is a fighter with the Kree Starforce who finds herself on Earth, and encountering Agent Nick Fury (Jackson). The storyline doesn’t give Larson a lot of time to establish a persona, but her charm, style and ass-kicking make her Marvel’s coolest customer and whatever it lacks in heart, it makes up for with sheer likeability.

Bella (voiced by Howard) a pit bull mix, has plenty of adventures on her journey from New Mexico back to her own owner in Colorado. Simple, shamelessly manipulative fare for children of all ages, with a sunny disposition that reflects the heroine’s own genial outlook.

Dumbo
  • 2019
  • US
  • 1h 52min

  • Directed by: Tim Burton
  • Cast: Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, Alan Arkin

In this remake of the 1941 film, one-armed circus worker Holt (Farrell) is struggling to reconnect with his bereft children while a certain large-eared pachyderm is figuring out the ropes. It looks lovely, but there’s a lot of extra plot shovelled in and it’s arguably overloaded, compared to the sincerity and simplicity of the original.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World

  • Directed by: Dean DeBlois
  • Cast: Jay Baruchel, America Ferrera, Cate Blanchett, Craig Ferguson, Jonah Hill, Kit Harington, Justin Rupple, Kristen Wiig, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, F. Murray Abraham, Gerard Butler

Hiccup (voiced by Baruchel) is now a chief with growing responsibilities, while Toothless the dragon is in love; but then dragon hunter Grimmel (Abraham) is determined to spoil people’s fun. The franchise is running out of steam; there’s too much going on and the central bond is obscured.

  • Directed by: Tina Gordon
  • Cast: Justin Hartley, Regina Hall, Marsai Martin

Jordan Sanders (Hall) is a bullying boss and former science geek who wakes up as a teenager (Martin). Not all of the one-liners succeed, but the writers have a lot of fun and Martin, who also produces, is a charming force of nature as the successful businesswoman in a 13-year-old’s body. A riotous love letter to black girl magic.

Billy Batson (Angel) is a teenager raised by a foster family, who’s given magic powers by The Wizard (Hounsou): if he shouts ‘SHAZAM!’ he becomes the titular cape-wearing adult (Levi). A superhero movie bursting with humour and heart, with a mischievous performance from Levi, inspired jokes, emotion and surprising cameos.

  • Cast: Lupita Nyong'o, Winston Duke, Elisabeth Moss, Tim Heidecker, Yahya Abdul Mateen II, Anna Diop

Adelaide (Nyong’o) and Gabe (Duke) arrive at their holiday home with their children, only to be confronted by a mysteriously familiar foursome. Peele’s follow up to Get Out is a neat twist on the home invasion story, with beautifully executed set pieces, and Nyong’o is phenomenal as both protagonist and chief aggressor. Fresh and arresting.

What Men Want

What Men Want
  • 2019

  • Cast: Taraji P. Henson, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Max Greenfield

Ali (Henson) is a sports agent who can suddenly understand the thoughts of her male co-workers. It fails to make the most of the battle of the sexes premise, becoming a predictable rom-com, but Henson gives an impressively physical performance and Badu has fun as the wacky psychic who starts the whole debacle.

Wonder Park

  • Cast: Brianna Denski, Jennifer Garner, Ken Hudson Campbell

June (Mali and Denski) is faced with being shipped off to math camp while her mother (Garner) seeks medical assistance; then she finds herself in a parallel universe where she has to save a theme park. An animated film with big ideas and some notable omissions, ultimately a slight but rewardingly bittersweet experience.
