The King of Thieves

The King of Thieves
  • 2018
  • UK
  • Directed by: James Marsh
  • Cast: Michael Caine, Charlie Cox, Michael Gambon

Brian (Caine) is an octogenarian gangster who puts together a team of old codgers to rob the Hatton Garden diamond vaults. The biggest and flashiest of the four versions so far of this story has lots of star power but a boring script, dislikeable characters and colourless direction. Pointless and disappointing.

Mary Poppins Returns

Mary Poppins Returns
  • 2018
  • US
  • 2h 10min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Rob Marshall
  • Cast: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Ben Whishaw, Emily Mortimer, Julie Walters, Dick Van Dyke, Angela Lansbury, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep

Michael Banks (Whishaw) is facing ruin after the death of his wife, and his sister Jane (Mortimer) can’t help—but then Mary Poppins (Blunt) sails down from the sky. Blunt is suitably brusque and radiant and a fine songstress, and while it’s a sliver of a story it’s impressively imaginative and unashamedly, triumphantly nostalgic.

Mary Queen of Scots

Mary Queen of Scots
  • 2018
  • UK/US
  • 2h 4min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Josie Rourke
  • Cast: Saoirse Ronan, Margot Robbie, Jack Lowden, David Tennant, Martin Compston, Joe Alwyn, Brendan Coyle, Guy Pearce

Mary Stuart (Ronan) and Elizabeth (Robbie) would like to be sisters but political rivalry drives them apart. Ronan gives a sophisticated performance and Robbie as Elizabeth is a blend of nervous uncertainty and confident outrage. Over the top, perhaps, but its ridiculousness hits a raw nerve in the current political climate, where women politicians are attacked for dancing.

National Theatre Live: The Lehman Trilogy

National Theatre Live: The Lehman Trilogy

by Stefano Massini, adapted by Ben Power directed by Sam Mendes

The story of a family and a company that changed the world, told in three parts on a single evening.

Academy Award-winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall, The Ferryman) directs Simon Russell Beale, Adam Godley and Ben Miles who play the Lehman Brothers, their sons and grandsons.

On a cold September morning in 1844 a young man from Bavaria stands on a New York dockside. Dreaming of a new life in the new world. He is joined by his two brothers and an American epic begins.

163 years later, the firm they establish – Lehman Brothers – spectacularly collapses into bankruptcy, and triggers the largest financial crisis in history.

This critically acclaimed and five-time Olivier Award nominated play features stunning set design from Es Devlin (NT Live: Hamlet) and will be broadcast live from London’s West End as part of National Theatre Live’s 10th Birthday season.
