  • Directed by: Michael Showalter
  • Cast: Kumail Nanjiani, Zoe Kazan, Holly Hunter, Ray Romano

Culture clash comedy written by real life couple Emily V Gordon and Kumail Nanjiani. It plays out with charming, sometimes toe-curling honesty and an acknowledgement of how complicated life can get when expectations weigh heavy and tradition unceremoniously intervenes.

  • Cast: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Ana de Armas, Mackenzie Davis, Sylvia Hoeks, Lennie James, Carla Juri, Robin Wright, Dave Bautista, Jared Leto

Blade Runner K (Gosling) is tasked with finding replicants who are passing themselves off as human, but then he makes an earth-shattering, game-changing discovery. Villeneuve’s long-awaited sequel to Scott’s original is beautiful, powerful and relevant; Gosling is exceptional, and Ford steals the show as the ageing but still gruff and quick-witted Deckard. A triumph.

  • 1h 29min
  • PG
  • Directed by: David Soren
  • Cast: Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch, Ed Helms

Animated superhero comedy based on the bestselling book series by Dav Pilkey. This is a film that sides with the kids, right down to its sly jabs at uncaring, cash-starved school systems and loose message about the value of laughing at yourself; and, of course, at the mere existence of a planet called Uranus.

Gru (Carell) and new wife and fellow agent Lucy (Wiig) are ensconced with their adorable adopted daughters when supervillain Balthazar Bratt (Parker) decides to take revenge on Hollywood for neglecting him. It’s all a bit familiar but it skilfully balances kid and adult appeal with its madcap approach and embarrassment of mischievous energy.

A Dog's Purpose

A wild puppy named Toby (Gad) is euthanised and reborn as a farm dog in the 60s, and then dies only to come back as a police dog, which then takes a bullet…and so on. Painfully manipulative cornball drama with laboured slapstick, romantic clichés and heavy-handed lessons, a high-cholesterol dog’s dinner.

Maurice (Bozo) is a penguin who’s been raised by Natacha, a tigress (Darah). He leads his own team of crime-fighting creatures against evil koala Igor (Darbois) and his baboons. Lush animation and a brisk, unpretentious story make for a cheap but cheerful rumble in the jungle for pre-teens.

Lloyd (Franco) is the son of evil Lord Garmadon (Theroux), who wants to conquer Ninjago; however, Lloyd is also one of the team of ninja dedicated to combatting Garmadon and his minions. Not the most inspired of the LEGO movies but bright, brash and amusing, with intricate action, lots of slapstick fun and a delightful sequence of a cat destroying a city.

It manages to showcase the brand without sacrificing every last ounce of soul, and is cute, simple and surefooted enough for its target audience, if not for anyone else.

  • 2017

  • 1h 31min

In this inexplicable sequel to the underwhelming 2014 original, Surly Squirrel (Arnett) teams up with idealistic Andie (Heigl) and Precious (Rudolph) to save their park from the Mayor (Moynihan). The characters are unappealing and the script relies on uninspired action and flat non-jokes. At least there’s no ‘Gangnam Style’ this time.

Set two years after Age of Ultron, Thor (Helmsworth) joins forces with his duplicitous brother Loki (Hiddleston) to battle Hela, Goddess of Death (Blanchett). Cult Kiwi director Taika Waititi's take on the Marvel universe is askew, irreverent and wonderfully idiotic, tipping the balance in favour of out-and-out comedy.
