Avengers: Age of Ultron

Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • 2015
  • US
  • 141 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Joss Whedon
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Samuel L. Jackson

Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark (Downey Jr) to keep the peace, goes rogue and decides to kill off the Avengers. Barely logical but impressively entertaining superhero fun; Johansson and Olsen are central to the action and Whedon's script is strong, snappy and irreverent, but it doesn't have much emotional impact.

When Air Force Once is shot down over Finland, the President (Jackson) escapes but finds that his only ally is a 13-year-old Finnish boy (Tommila) on a solo hunting trip. Cheerfully derivative action flick with Jackson well-cast as POTUS, while Tommila is refreshingly unpredictable. A pleasurable, undemanding B movie.

The Boxtrolls

  • Directed by: Graham Annable, Anthony Stacchi
  • Cast: Isaac Hempstead-Wright, Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan

Eggs (Hempstead-Wright) lives underground with a family of Boxtrolls, marginalised creatures who make their home from rubbish. But then the trolls are hunted by a group of exterminators, led by the grotesque Snatcher (Kingsley). Adventurous, intense and sometimes disturbing animated movie, with plenty to keep adults occupied; whether kids will respond is another question.

Cinderella

Cinderella

  • Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
  • Cast: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Stellan Skarsgård, Nonso Anozie, Derek Jacobi, Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin

Cinderella (James) loses her parents and is left with stepmother Lady Tremaine (Blanchett) and cruel stepsisters (McShera and Grainger); but soon enough, she's off to the ball. Weitz's crafty script has enough surreal touches to keep you interested and the result, while hardly a new take on the story, is still a pleasant surprise.

When teenager Bianca (Whitman) is called out by her social circle as their DUFF – Designated Ugly Fat Friend – she decides to rid herself of the label. Heartfelt if somewhat formulaic comedy about staying true to yourself, with a smart script and outstanding performances from Whitman and Janney as her supportive single mother.

Far from the Madding Crowd

  • Directed by: Thomas Vinterberg
  • Cast: Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Juno Temple, Michael Sheen

Bathsheba Everdene (Mulligan) is a headstrong rural girl who inherits a farm and attracts the attention of three suitors; lowly Gabriel (Schoenaerts), well-to-do Boldwood (Sheen) and unscrupulous Troy (Sturridge). A straight-up take on Hardy's classic; Mulligan is a convincing Bathsheba and Vinterberg captures the brewing tragedy magnificently.

Deckard (Statham) is a Special Forces assassin determined to get revenge on the team after his brother has been left in a coma. With the shark rapidly receding in the wake of the franchise's waterskis, the latest instalment is insane but has a puppyish desperation to please, and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Get Hard

Hedge fund exec James (Ferrell) is to be sent to prison for fraud, so he persuades law-abiding car wash owner Darnell (Hart) to teach him how to survive in prison, on the grounds that Darnell is black. If you can stand lots of jokes about prison rape, it's occasionally brilliant, if somewhat uneven.

Oh (Parsons) is part of an alien race who've colonised Earth by decanting humans to amusement parks in Australia, but he's forced to team up with lost little girl Tip (Rihanna). A grating experience, thanks to a confusing and uninteresting story, wall-to-wall Rihanna songs, twee dialogue and Parsons' annoyingly whiny voice.

The espionage-savvy penguins team up with an interspecies special forces group, to tangle with octopus/scientist Dr Octavius Brine (Malkovich). The knockabout style offers few chances for genuine drama and the result is a lighthearted, frenetic but rather unimaginative romp, a step down from the psychedelic wit of Europe's Most Wanted.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water

Life goes on at usual in Bikini Bottom until real-life pirate Burger-Beard (Banderas) causes apocalyptic mayhem; SpongeBob and arch-nemesis Plankton must team up to defeat him. Despite a lazy superhero plot twist in the final act, it has enough colourful characters and hilarious one-liners to keep both kids and adults entertained.

Vera (Vikander) is a wilful and intelligent English girl; when her friend Victor (Morgan), fiancé Roland (Harington) and brother Edward (Egerton) go off to fight in WW I, she follows them to be a nurse. Sparing and respectful adaptation of Brittain's 1933 memoir; tasteful rather than innovative, it still packs a punch.

Stephen Hawking (Redmayne) and Jane Wilde (Jones) lock eyes at a university party, but their budding love affair is given a blow by his diagnosis of motor neurone disease. Redmayne is astonishingly good and Jones inspires sympathy and admiration, but the script is never really convincing.

When Tink's friend Fawn (Goodwin) befriends a mysterious creature in the woods, scout fairy Nyx (Dawson) decides to capture it before it can do any damage. The animation is agile and colourful and Goodwin delivers a likable central performance; it could have been funnier, but otherwise a charming addition to the franchise.

When the world's animals board Noah's ark to escape from the flood, two junior creatures fall overboard and must find their way back to the ship. The extremely predictable story is a bit too similar to Finding Nemo and there's none of the wit, voice-over wizardry or impressive visuals of a Pixar production.

Six friends hanging out with each other on video chat become aware that they're the target of a mysterious hacker/stalker. A cleverly-done video-chat-turned-nightmare session which exhausts its concept well short of its modest 83-minute running time; it's hard to care about characters who are bullies and betrayers.

In this assured adaptation of Cheryl Strayed's memoir, Witherspoon is outstanding, giving her best performance since Walk the Line.
