All The Money In The World

All The Money In The World
  • 2018
  • US
  • 2h 13min

  • Directed by: Ridley Scott
  • Cast: Michelle Williams, Christopher Plummer, Mark Wahlberg, Charlie Plummer

The story of the kidnapping of the grandson of miserly industrialist J Paul Getty (Plummer). Plummer, who was a last-minute replacement for the now-disgraced Kevin Spacey, brings understated gravitas and Williams is noble and credible as the kidnap victim’s mother Gail. A sometimes blood-boiling morality tale, pulled off by Scott with remarkable aplomb.

  • Directed by: Jaume Collet-Serra
  • Cast: Liam Neeson, Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson

Michael McCauley (Neeson) is made redundant one day. On the train home, the mysterious Joanna (Farmiga) makes him a cash offer to find someone. Neeson and Collet-Serra’s fourth collaboration is as generic as it sounds, with breathless action, numerous plot holes and a ludicrous story.

Darkest Hour

Darkest Hour

  • Directed by: Joe Wright
  • Cast: Gary Oldman, Kristin Scott Thomas, Ben Mendlesohn, Ronald Pickup

May 1940: the situation in Europe is worsening, and Britain needs a new prime minister. The latest in a very long line of recent Churchill performances is by far the best: Oldman is virtually unrecognisable and attacks the part with relish, with Scott Thomas excellent as his wife Clemmie. It may veer into hero worship but it’s a confidently handled crowdpleaser.

Molly's Game

Molly's Game
  • 2017

  • Directed by: Aaron Sorkin
  • Cast: Jessica Chastain, Idris Elba, Kevin Costner

Competitive skier Molly Bloom (Chastain) turns to running professional poker games after suffering a career-ending sports injury. Sorkin’s directorial debut features much of his crisp dialogue which Chastain and Elba manage to make sound natural; shame about the script’s dispiriting preoccupation with Molly’s daddy issues.

  • Directed by: Steven Spielberg
  • Cast: Meryl Streep, Tom Hanks, Sarah Paulson

The story of how the Washington Post, led by its publisher Katherine Graham (Streep) and editor Ben Bradlee (Hanks), got the chance to print devastating revelations about US involvement in Vietnam. An old-fashioned Hollywood showstopper with a stellar supporting cast, and sizeable if predictable performances from the leads.

  • Directed by: Martin McDonagh
  • Cast: Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, Sam Rockwell, Peter Dinklage

Exasperated by the police’s failure to catch her daughter’s murderer, Mildred Hayes (McDormand) buys ad space on the titular billboards to tear a strip off the police chief (Harrelson). McDonagh’s latest delicately balances the lingering pain of the crime itself with dark comedy, and a superb cast is topped by a magnificent performance from McDormand.
