Sequel to Marvel's 2015 superhero flick Ant-Man, which sees the eponymous shrinking hero (Rudd) joining forces with the Wasp (Lilly) to rescue her long-lost mother (Pfeiffer) from a quantum realm. Silly yet also subtle, the film brims with chemistry from its strong cast.

They eventually call on freelance bio-exorcist Betelgeuse (pronounced 'Beetle-juice') to deal with the problem in his own inimitable fashion. A movie of exuberantly eccentric cartoonish capers, which creates its own comic cosmos where the unexpected is the norm.

Willis plays a cop who attends a tower block Christmas party with his estranged spouse. The building is raided by terrorists, so it's left to Willis to bump off the baddies and save the hostages while the police and FBI languish ineptly on the sidelines. Unbearably tense actioner that gets good mileage out of yawning lift-shafts and flying bullets, while Willis is convincing as an ordinary guy trying to cope with it all. Watch out for Brit Rickman as a villain with a sense of humour.

The first and best of the series – and one of the best of all slasher movies. Escaped psycho Michael Myers returns to the town where he killed his sister several years before and picks up where he left off with remarkable ease. Pleasence is the obsessive psychiatrist on his trail, convinced he is to blame for the escape. A scary reminder of what a blood-soaked genre could achieve if only it recovered from sequelitis.

Jonas (Statham) is a diver who’s brought to an underwater research facility to rescue people from a sinister threat—the titular giant shark. It’s a $150m B-movie; the creature itself is no masterpiece, and the plot is ridiculous, but Statham carries off the outlandish premise with a confident performance in a role he was born to play.

Royal Ballet: Mayerling

Via Satellite from The Royal Opera HouseMayerling is a classic of the Royal Ballet repertory, with its emotional depth, haunting imagery, and one of the most demanding roles ever created for a male dancer. Kenneth MacMillan choreographed a complex work around the psychologically tormented heir to the Habsburg Empire, Crown Prince Rudolf. From the ballets start, the glamour of the Austro-Hungarian court is contrasted with undercurrents of sexual and political intrigue that drive the story to its violent climax in a double suicide. The large cast allows for impressive ensembles in addition to the ballets many solos of distinctive character and pas de deux of disturbing eroticism. This ballet, bursting with intensity, madness and passion, proves that sometimes the truth is more scandalous than fiction.195 mins- 2 intervals

  • Written by: John Carpenter
  • Cast: Roddy Piper, Keith David, Meg Foster, Raymond St Jacques, Peter Jason, Sy Richardson, George 'Buck' Flower

Returning to his B-movie roots, Carpenter's classic is a sprightly sci-fi satire with a decidedly 1950s feel. As recession grips America, drifter Piper discovers that the yuppies controlling the economy are in fact aliens, and they're using subliminal advertising to keep the populace docile. Although the serious and political premise set up in the first half needs more of a follow-through, the knockabout action that follows is well handled, with entertaining results.
