The Favourite

The Favourite

  • Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos
  • Cast: Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, Emma Stone, Nicholas Hoult

In the court of Queen Anne (Colman), power is wielded by Lady Sarah Marlborough (Weisz), but then Sarah’s young cousin Abigail (Stone) arrives. Brash, bawdy and beguiling, and a deceptively acute commentary on the nature of power, with career-best work from Weisz and Stone and a commanding performance from Colman as the ailing Queen.

  • Directed by: Damien Chazelle
  • Cast: Ryan Gosling, Corey Stoll, Claire Foy

Biopic of the first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong (Gosling), with subtle and unshowy performances from Gosling and from Foy as his no-BS wife Jan. An intimate and moving character drama with raw and visceral space-peril thrills and a hero whose fame rests on modesty, curiosity and problem-solving purposefulness.

  • 2018
  • UK/France

  • Directed by: David Kerr
  • Cast: Rowan Atkinson, Olga Kurylenko, Ben Miller, Emma Thompson

Johnny English (Atkinson) is called back into action after a cyberattack reveals the identities of British secret agents. The cast are game, but the dialogue lacks snap and the direction and editing are atrocious. The lack of laughs are all the more infuriating because it’s easy to see how it could have been funnier.

Royal Ballet: Don Quixote

Cervantes's story of the bumbling knight Don Quixote has inspired countless artistic interpretations. Marius Petipa choreographed this sparkling ballet about the encounters of the man from La Mancha and his faithful squire Sancho Panza. At its heart are virtuoso roles for the lovers Basilio and Kitri.

Carlos Acosta chose this joyful classic for his first production for The Royal Ballet. His vibrant staging brings together the whole Company in such roles as exuberant villagers, passionate gypsies and even fantasy flowers.

The story follows Don Quixote's picaresque journey to do deeds in honour of his imaginary noble lady, Dulcinea. Sunny, charming, funny and touching - Don Quixote is a ballet as full of uplifting emotion as it is of astonishing ballet technique.

Choreography by Carlos Acosta after Marius Petipa. Music by Ludwig Minkus. Arranged and orchestrated by Martin Yates.

The Shawshank Redemption

The Shawshank Redemption
  • 1994
  • US
  • 2h 23min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Frank Darabont
  • Cast: Tim Robbins, Morgan Freeman

Banged up for a crime he didn't commit (ain't they all?) quiet man Robbins plans a slow but effective revenge on the unnecessarily harsh prison regime. Freeman excels as the fellow con with an uncanny knack for procuring desired items. The film is certainly overlong, but the apocryphal feel to the storytelling and the period detail are well handled in what is, ultimately, a very fine movie indeed.

This live-action film from Disney that features a crime-fighting dog with super-powers, although a seemingly attractive proposition for fans of both the talking-animal and superhero genres, is merely a wayward affair with none of the humble charms of the 1960s cartoon series.
