Mitch Rapp (O’Brien) is an orphan whose fiancée is murdered by terrorists; he’s then recruited as a CIA killer. Blade Runner K (Gosling) is tasked with finding replicants who are passing themselves off as human, but then he makes an earth-shattering, game-changing discovery. Villeneuve’s long-awaited sequel to Scott’s original is beautiful, powerful and relevant; Gosling is exceptional, and Ford steals the show as the ageing but still gruff and quick-witted Deckard. A triumph.

  • 2017
  • US
  • 1h 29min
  • PG
  • Directed by: David Soren
  • Cast: Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch, Ed Helms

Animated superhero comedy based on the bestselling book series by Dav Pilkey. This is a film that sides with the kids, right down to its sly jabs at uncaring, cash-starved school systems and loose message about the value of laughing at yourself; and, of course, at the mere existence of a planet called Uranus.

Gru (Carell) and new wife and fellow agent Lucy (Wiig) are ensconced with their adorable adopted daughters when supervillain Balthazar Bratt (Parker) decides to take revenge on Hollywood for neglecting him. It’s all a bit familiar but it skilfully balances kid and adult appeal with its madcap approach and embarrassment of mischievous energy.

Dunkirk

Dunkirk

  • 1h 46min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Christopher Nolan
  • Written by: Christopher Nolan
  • Cast: Tom Hardy, Mark Rylance, Cillian Murphy, Harry Styles

Survival story set during the battle of Dunkirk in WWII. The younger cast members acquit themselves admirably, including pop star Harry Styles; and, in its uncomfortable depiction of frightened men looking to save their own skin, this is far from straightforwardly patriotic fare. As he delivers non-stop visual audacity, once again Nolan shows himself to be a master of pure cinema.

A group of medical students embark on a series of experiments in which they kill themselves, experience the afterlife and are brought back. The characters are unlikeable, there’s no reverence for the life-after-death theme and every modern horror cliché gets trotted out. It makes Schumacher’s mildly enjoyable 1990 original seem like a masterpiece.

Alice (Witherspoon) is a newly single mum of two who’s moved back to her childhood home in California, where a drunken night leads to three twentysomething dudes moving into her guest house and winning over her cutesy kids and cynical mother (Bergen). Sickly sweet yet tough to swallow, this entirely wastes the talents of all involved.

A group of kids discovers that their town is haunted by an evil shape-shifting clown (Skarsgård). Well-crafted and properly creepy, with a sinister turn from Skarsgård as the dribbling Pennywise and Lillis superb as the gang’s only female member, it lays down solid groundwork for the planned second instalment.

Maurice (Bozo) is a penguin who’s been raised by Natacha, a tigress (Darah). He leads his own team of crime-fighting creatures against evil koala Igor (Darbois) and his baboons. Lush animation and a brisk, unpretentious story make for a cheap but cheerful rumble in the jungle for pre-teens.

After the Kingsman HQ is destroyed, street kid-turned-superspy Eggsy (Egerton) and gadget man Merlin (Strong) team up with their US equivalents to defeat drug baroness Poppy (Moore). Vaughan and Goldman turn up the preposterous comic book shenanigans at the expense of charm and basic plausibility, but fans will like it.

Lloyd (Franco) is the son of evil Lord Garmadon (Theroux), who wants to conquer Ninjago; however, Lloyd is also one of the team of ninja dedicated to combatting Garmadon and his minions. Not the most inspired of the LEGO movies but bright, brash and amusing, with intricate action, lots of slapstick fun and a delightful sequence of a cat destroying a city.

Alex (Winslet), a photojournalist, and Ben (Elba), a surgeon, are flying to Denver in a charter plane when their pilot suffers a midair stroke and their plane comes down. Despite thrilling real-life backdrops, Winslet and Elba's lack of chemistry hobbles the not very credible romance that develops between them, and you feel more attached to the dead pilot’s dog.

Princess Buttercup is chosen by the nasty Prince Humperdinck to be his bride but her heart belongs to the farm boy Westley. The princess' kidnapping prompts the return of Westley, now a pirate, and launches a series of swashbuckling adventures, after which true love can prevail. William Goldman's heavily ironic fairy tale is given a spirited treatment by the director of Stand By Me and an enthusiastic troupe.

A group of male thirtysomethings go for a hiking holiday in Sweden in memory of a dead friend, but there’s a Malign Presence in the woods. There’s plenty of atmosphere, style and sturdy characterisation but not enough fresh scares or potent revelations, and we’ve been lost in trees like these too often before.

When Queen Victoria (Dench) is introduced to a young man from India, Abdul Karim (Fazal), she is charmed when he prostrates himself and kisses her foot: unlikely cross-cultural friendship and Urdu lessons duly ensue. Fazal and Dench are excellent and there’s a surprisingly effective political subtext.
