Fighting with My Family

Fighting with My Family
  • 2019
  • UK/US
  • 1h 48min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Stephen Merchant
  • Cast: Florence Pugh, Lena Headey, Nick Frost, Jack Lowden, Vince Vaughn, Dwayne Johnson

Based on the true story of WWE champion Saraya-Jade Bevis, aka Paige (Pugh), following her journey from dismal Norwich via Florida boot camp to the stadium. Pugh and Lowden as her brother are good, but the innuendo is crude, the characterisation shallow and the attempt to depict Saraya’s rise as some kind of feminist revolution is unconvincing.

Glyndebourne Live: Cinderella

Glyndebourne LIVE Cinderella (Cendrillon)With its combination of enchanting love story and broad, burlesque comedy, Cendrillon is one of the great operatic fairytales - a Cinderella that looks back to Charles Perraults original story in all its richness and ambiguity. Massenets sensuous, Belle Epoque fairytale is gilded with lavish orchestral textures and glittering vocal writing, drawing on everything from baroque dances to Wagner-inspired chromaticism to bring its story to colourful life, conjuring a world of infinite musical and emotional variety. Fiona Shaws production makes its Festival debut here conducted by John Wilson, with a cast led by Glyndebourne favourites Danielle de Niese as Cendrillon and Kate Lindsey as her Prince. Seminal 60s caper heist movie. Jailbird Caine takes his self-preservation society of criminals to Rome to rob the place silly. Altogether now: 'You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!' Great action, great tunes, a classic (kind of).

Kind Hearts and Coronets

Blacker than black Ealing comedy has a suave and sophisticated Price killing off an entire family tree (all played by Guinness) in order to move himself closer to the d'Ascoyne family title. Low-key cynicism and disarming callousness make it a true gem of British post-war cinema.

  • Cast: Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Anne Moss, Hugo Weaving, Joe Pantoliano

Absolutely gobsmacking science fiction thriller boasting cutting edge special effects, rocking action sequences, a smart story and an immensely entertaining cartoon sensibility (the film was storyboarded by comic artist Geoff Darrow). In the future day-to-day life is merely a scam, a matrix camouflaging reality - a post-apocalyptic nightmare world in which humankind are a power source for domineering super-computers. Only Reeves' cyber hero, Neo, and a gang of hacker pirates stand between the evil technology and their race's extinction.

Saving Private Ryan

Saving Private Ryan
  • 1998
  • US
  • 2h 50min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Steven Spielberg
  • Written by: Robert Rodat
  • Cast: Tom Hanks, Edward Burns, Matt Damon, Barry Pepper, Tom Sizemore

Like no film in recent memory, 'Saving Private Ryan' focuses its attention squarely on the brutalities endured by American soldiers in World War II. Central to this impact is the already legendary opening half hour, detailing with remorseless brilliance the carnage of the D-Day landings. Understandably enough, Spielberg finds it hard to follow up this bravura introduction. The actual meat of the story, in which Hanks is sent off with the remnants of his unit to locate the eponymous Ryan, is built on rugged rather than subtle lines.
