Almost Christmas

Almost Christmas
  • 2016
  • US
  • 111 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: David E Talbert
  • Cast: Danny Glover, Mo'Nique, Kimberly Elise, Omar Epps

Recently widowed Walter (Glover) presides over the homecoming of his four grown children, their precociously cutesy offspring and his outrageous sister-in-law (Mo'Nique). There are worse Christmas movies and the African-American ensemble cast is game and mostly engaging, but the dramatic elements are stretched and tedious, and it's routine stuff.

Bad Santa 2

  • Directed by: Mark Waters
  • Cast: Billy Bob Thornton, Tony Cox, Brett Kelly, Kathy Bates, Christina Hendricks

Willie (Thornton) has slid back to rock bottom when his estranged accomplice Marcus (Cox) returns with the promise of a big payday. The first film was foul-mouthed, politically incorrect, lewd and rude, but also bracing and very funny. This is just bludgeoning, misanthropic and depressing and should never have been made.

  • 2016
  • US
  • 118 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Edward Zwick
  • Cast: Tom Cruise, Cobie Smulders, Robert Knepper

Just when Jack Reacher (Cruise) decides to invite badass friend and fellow crimebuster Susan Turner (Smulders) on a date, he learns that she's been arrested and charged with espionage. Time to get reachin'! Comfortably familiar, old-fashioned entertainment with kick-ass women characters who aren't just there to make Cruise look good, although he does anyway.

The Light Between Oceans

The Light Between Oceans
  • 2016
  • US/Australia/UK/New Zealand
  • 132 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Derek Cianfrance
  • Cast: Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz, Bryan Brown, Jack Thompson

Tom (Fassbender) is a repressed former soldier working as a lighthouse keeper in post-WWI Australia; one day he and his wife Isabel (Vikander) find a live baby and dead man in a rowboat. Weighty stuff, but the laboriously worthy screenplay and overwrought direction make it disappointingly conventional and mawkish where it should be moving.

Moana

Moana
  • 2016
  • US
  • 103 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Ron Clements, John Musker
  • Cast: Auli'i Cravalho, Dwayne Johnson, Temuera Morrison, Nicole Scherzinger, Rachel House, Jemaine Clement, Alan Tudyk

Moana (Carvalho) is a Polynesian girl who revives the voyaging tradition of her island tribe, with the help of buffoonish demigod Maui (Johnson, sending himself up.) The unabashed positivity is pure Disney but Bush's zingy screenplay satirises the studio's princess obsession and doesn't bother with a love interest. A spirited, vividly realised and genuinely rousing adventure.i.

  • 2016
  • US
  • 124 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Mira Nair
  • Cast: Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo, Lupita Nyong'o

Biopic of Phiona Mutesi (Nalwanga), a girl from the slums of Katwe, Uganda, who turned out to have a genius for chess. Confidently heartwarming stuff, if a little predictable, with a wonderfully engrossing performance from Nalwanga and classy support from Oyelowo as Phiona's coach and Nyong'o as her mother.

  • Directed by: Nicholas Stoller, Doug Sweetland
  • Written by: Nicholas Stoller
  • Cast: Andy Samberg, Katie Crown, Kelsey Grammer, Keegan-Michael Key, Jordan Peele, Jennifer Aniston, Ty Burrell, Danny Trejo, Stephen Kramer Glickman

Storks used to deliver babies, but now they run an Amazon-style delivery service; then ambitious stork Junior (Samberg) and colleague Tulip (Crown) have to deliver an actual baby. Colourful animation and some amusing voice work can't fix the gigantic plot holes, which will leave both parents and kids scratching their heads.

A Street Cat Named Bob
  • 2016
  • UK
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Roger Spottiswoode
  • Cast: Luke Treadaway, Ruta Gedmintas, Joanne Froggatt, Anthony Head

James (Treadaway) is a homeless heroin addict who gets onto a support programme, which offers him a flat on condition he stick to the rules. Enter the titular cat, which forces James to care for something else. Based on a true story; Treadaway is very watchable, and Bob the cat is (largely) played by himself. Gritty and heartwarming.

Sully

Sully
  • 2016
  • US
  • 96 min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: Clint Eastwood
  • Cast: Tom Hanks, Aaron Eckhart, Laura Linney

The story of pilot Chesley 'Sully' Sullenberger (Hanks), who became an unassuming hero in 2009 after successfully ditching a US Airways Airbus 320 on the Hudson River. Eckhart gives strong support as co-pilot Jeff Skiles but the film belongs to Hanks, whose understated performance, with the skilful re-enactments of the crash, make for riveting drama.
