A cute, blue-eyed Yeti is found hiding on the roof of a Shanghai apartment building, and teenager Yi (voiced by Bennett) and her friends Jin (Trainor) and Peng (Tsai) decide to help him get back to the Himalayas. Enjoyable, smartly paced and gorgeously animated; hardly very original, but full of comic relief and heart.

The Addams Family

The Addams Family
  • 2019
  • US

  • PG
  • Directed by: Conrad Vernon, Greg Tiernan
  • Cast: Oscar Isaac, Charlize Theron, Chloë Grace Moretz, Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Snoop Dogg, Bette Midler, Allison Janney

The titular family, Morticia (Theron), Gomez (Isaac), Wednesday (Moretz) and Pugsley (Wolfhard), are targeted by reality TV host Margaux Needler (Janney). The voice cast is decent and the style pays homage to Charles Addams' drawings, but it misses the darkly Gothic spirit of both the original and the Barry Sonnenfeld films, being disconcertingly family-friendly.

The Aeronauts

  • Cast: Eddie Redmayne, Felicity Jones,

In 1862, meteorology pioneer James Glaisher (Redmayne) takes flight in a hot air balloon piloted by Amelia Wren (Jones). Old-school adventure with spectacular effects and a neatly layered screenplay; any predictability is offset by the film’s charm and the fond chemistry between Redmayne and Jones.

Quinn (Lail) is a young nurse who gets an app for her phone that predicts the date of your death. Daft debut feature from writer-director Dec, in which a few twists on genre formulae and some comic relief aren’t enough to redeem the silliness and general lack of logic.

Danny (McGregor) is still recovering from the events at the Overlook Hotel, when his young friend Abra (Curran) is targeted by an evil cult led by Rose the Hat (Ferguson). McGregor is affecting, Curran is impressive and Ferguson is deeply sinister, but jarring imagery and laboured references to The Shining break the spell.

Gemini Man

Gemini Man

  • Directed by: Ang Lee
  • Cast: Will Smith, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Clive Owen

Henry (Smith) is a 51-year-old assassin who develops a conscience, but the powers that be want to retire him; then baddie businessman Varris (Owen) sends a 31-year-old clone of Henry after him. The characters are totally underdeveloped and the effects (include Lee’s favourite high frame rate) make it look cheap. Smith is as watchable as ever, but that’s all.

Roy (McKellen) is a con man who targets wealthy widows, and when he targets Betty (Mirren) her son Steven (Tovey) becomes suspicious. It’s a blend of several genres which don’t quite fuse and is ultimately diverting but far from essential.

Destiny (Wu) and Ramona (Lopez) are strippers who, with their friends, devise a way of getting more cash out of their clients. Wu gives a sophisticated performance and her dynamic with Lopez pops with convincing intensity, making for a raucous crime story that’s by turns gorgeous, funny and surprisingly moving.

Arthur Fleck (Phoenix) is an unsuccessful clown who wants to be a comedian, but he gradually turns to evil. This dizzying origin story about Batman’s nemesis is like an ode to 1970s New York City; Phoenix is astonishing and Phillips’s grave vision never swerves. Unmissable.

  • Cast: Renée Zellweger, Jessie Buckley, Rufus Sewell

A look at the later life of Judy Garland (Zellweger), as she marries her fifth husband (Wittrock) and performs a five-week run at a London nightclub. Zellweger is captivating as the deeply lonely star, struggling to keep her work commitments, adored but unhappy and wracked with guilt about being away from her children.

Kate (Clarke) is a Yugoslavian immigrant whose life is going downhill until she meets the mysterious bike-riding Tom (Golding), who seems too good to be true. Thompson and Kimmings’ script is a saccharine romantic fantasy and George Michael’s music isn’t always incorporated effectively, but its heart is in the right place.

  • 2h 32min
  • Directed by: James Mangold

Car designer Carroll Shelby (Damon) teams up with mechanic/driver Ken Miles (Bale) in the story of how Ford tried to beat Ferrari at Le Mans in 1966. The race scenes are directed with thrilling energy, and if scenes between Miles and his wife Mollie (Balfe) are uneven, it’s an effective story about dreamers who risked everything.

Midway

The story of the Battle of Midway, the WWII encounter that shifted the war in the Pacific in the Americans’ favour. Emmerich assembles a solid if rather uninspiring cast, the CGI-honed battle sequences are competent but not exactly nerve-shredding and the characters are two-dimensional.

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood
  • 2019
  • US / UK
  • 2h 45min
  • Directed by: Quentin Tarantino
  • Cast: James Marsden, Margot Robbie, Leonardo DiCaprio

Past-his-peak actor Rick Dalton (DiCaprio) and his stuntman and buddy Cliff Booth (Pitt) are living in Hollywood in 1969; then Sharon Tate (Robbie) and her husband Roman Polanski move in next door. Compelling and provocative, but uneven; for all the fine performances, black comedy and savage violence, Tarantino may have bitten off more than he can chew.

It may sound contrived, but the Tyler-Zak relationship is incredibly sweet, and a cast of indie movie royalty make for a cockle-warming delight.

Farmageddon: A Shaun the Sheep Movie

Shaun and his gang of sheep are getting up to mischief that puts them at odds with sensible sheepdog Bitzer; then an alien craft arrives. This dialogue-free pristinely shambolic stop-motion romp is, in its deft way, a crowd-pleaser for everyone, with enough Close Encounters references to keep parents interested.
