  • 108 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Chris Williams, Don Hall
  • Cast: Ryan Potter, Scott Adsit, Jamie Chung, Damon Wayans Jr., Génesis Rodríguez, T. J. Miller, Daniel Henney, Maya Rudolph

Hiro (Potter) is a 14 year old robotics genius who, after a family tragedy, teams up with inflatable robot Baymax (Adsit) to become crimefighting superheroes. This Disney adaptation of a Marvel comic deals with dark themes of loss and grief but also has plenty of heart and some big laughs, especially from Adsit.

  • Directed by: Kenneth Branagh
  • Cast: Lily James, Richard Madden, Cate Blanchett, Helena Bonham Carter, Holliday Grainger, Sophie McShera, Stellan Skarsgård, Nonso Anozie, Derek Jacobi, Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin

Cinderella (James) loses her parents and is left with stepmother Lady Tremaine (Blanchett) and cruel stepsisters (McShera and Grainger); but soon enough, she's off to the ball. Weitz's crafty script has enough surreal touches to keep you interested and the result, while hardly a new take on the story, is still a pleasant surprise.

  • Cast: Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Miles Teller

Tris (Woodley), Four (James) and the remnants of the Dauntless race tirelessly hither and thither in part 2 of the Divergent series. Woodley does very well with what she's given, but the other parts are underwritten and it all feels like a build-up to the extended finale of this bewildering and hardly essential franchise.

Deckard (Statham) is a Special Forces assassin determined to get revenge on the team after his brother has been left in a coma. With the shark rapidly receding in the wake of the franchise's waterskis, the latest instalment is insane but has a puppyish desperation to please, and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Fifty Shades of Grey

Fifty Shades of Grey
  • 2015
  • US
  • 18
  • Directed by: Sam Taylor-Johnson
  • Cast: Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan, Luke Grimes, Victor Rasuk, Jennifer Ehle

Despite its troubling gender politics and distinct lack of plot, the likeable Johnson brings nuance and charm to a paper-thin character; Dornan manages to offer a hint of humanity; and given the many constraints, this sleek, fairly trim and occasionally sensual adaptation is the best imaginable outcome.

Focus

Focus

  • US
  • 104 min

  • Directed by: Glenn Ficarra/John Requa
  • Cast: Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Rodrigo Santoro

Nicky (Smith) is a lifelong con man who takes wannabe swindler Jess (Robbie) under his wing, only to fall for her; dull romantic twists and not-very-ingenious stings ensue. The two stars have almost no chemistry and the film's greatest scam is that it fools you into thinking it's going to amount to more than it does.

Get Hard

Get Hard

Hedge fund exec James (Ferrell) is to be sent to prison for fraud, so he persuades law-abiding car wash owner Darnell (Hart) to teach him how to survive in prison, on the grounds that Darnell is black. If you can stand lots of jokes about prison rape, it's occasionally brilliant, if somewhat uneven.

Jim Terrier (Penn) is a hired assassin who undertakes a political hit; years later he becomes a target, and must find who wants him dead. Risible thriller with a clichéd script that wastes good actors (Bardem, Rylance, Penn himself) in a clumsy attempt to reinvent its star and producer as an action hero.

Oh (Parsons) is part of an alien race who've colonised Earth by decanting humans to amusement parks in Australia, but he's forced to team up with lost little girl Tip (Rihanna). A confusing and uninteresting story, wall-to-wall Rihanna songs, twee dialogue and Parsons' annoyingly whiny voice make for a grating experience.

Horns

Horns

  • Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Juno Temple, Heather Graham

When Ig (Radcliffe)'s girlfriend Merrin (Temple) is murdered, suspicion falls on him; but then he sprouts horns and people begin to confess their secrets to him. Unfortunately Aja neglects the more interesting crisis-of-faith theme and overstuffs the narrative, so despite nice work from Radcliffe (and Graham, great fun as an evil waitress) it lacks hiss or bite.

Eggsy (Egerton) is a streetwise petty criminal, who debonair secret agent Harry (Firth) inducts into Kingsman, a super-secret spy organisation going up against bonkers, lisping billionaire Richmond Valentine (Jackson). Egerton is confident and engaging, Firth is visibly enjoying himself, and despite the odd puerile joke it's riotously entertaining.

Jimmy (Neeson), a lonely alcoholic and associate of gangster Shawn Maguire (Harris), is broken by regret for his sins, but when Maguire puts out a hit on Jimmy's son Michael (Kinnaman), we know what'll happen: Liam Kicks Ass. Solid, watchable actioner with fine work from Neeson and Kinnaman; no classic but satisfactory.

The Seventh Son

The Seventh Son

Tom Ward (Barnes), the seventh son of a seventh son, becomes apprentice to the last of the 'spooks', Master Gregory (Bridges), with the aim of eradicating supernatural forces. Enjoyable hokum, with Moore wonderfully bitchy and Bridges unleashing Brian Blessed-like levels of ham. To be treasured by connoisseurs of truly bad film.

When the Farmer gets lost in the Big City, Shaun (Fletcher) and his friends leave Mossy Bottom Farm to rescue him. With a steady stream of hilarious, well-timed sight gags, it's a beautifully made comedy for the whole family, packed with the kind of detail that rewards future viewings.

Life goes on at usual in Bikini Bottom until real-life pirate Burger-Beard (Banderas) causes apocalyptic mayhem; SpongeBob and arch-nemesis Plankton must team up to defeat him. Despite a lazy superhero plot twist in the final act, it has enough colourful characters and hilarious one-liners to keep both kids and adults entertained.

Lonely factory worker Jerry (Reynolds) has regular conversations with his cat and dog, which take an odd turn when he kills a female co-worker. Satrapi's candy-coloured vision perfectly complements Perry's gleefully twisted script, and Reynolds (who voices all the animals) plays a blinder.

Nick Wild (Statham), a security expert working the backstreets of Vegas, gets a price on his head when he goes after a mobster for assaulting his friend Holly (Garcia-Lorido). Goldman's hard-bitten dialogue is laboured, the fight scenes are dull and it's a nasty mess all round.
