Accidental Love

Accidental Love
  • 2015

  • 100 min
  • PG
  • Directed by: David O Russell
  • Cast: Jessica Biel, Raymond L Brown Jr, Jake Gyllenhaal

When waitress Alice (Biel) gets a nail lodged in her brain, her life spins out of control. Writer/director Russell shot this back in 2008, but it was never completed and he's removed his name from this rush-release. Biel has seldom had a better role but you can see why Russell washed his hands of this half-baked mess.

Avengers: Age of Ultron

  • 12A
  • Directed by: Joss Whedon
  • Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, James Spader, Samuel L. Jackson

Ultron, an artificial intelligence created by Tony Stark (Downey Jr) to keep the peace, goes rogue and decides to kill off the Avengers. Barely logical but impressively entertaining superhero fun; Johansson and Olsen are central to the action and Whedon's script is strong, snappy and irreverent, but it doesn't have much emotional impact.

A-list star Vince (Grenier) is making his directorial debut; his brother Johnny Drama (Dillon) thinks it could be his acting breakthrough. The boys, in short, are back. This big screen version of the HBO show offers fans a movie-length slab of Hollywood excess; newcomers will be unmoved.

  • Cast: Ethan Hawke, January Jones, Zoë Kravitz

USAF Major Tom Egan (Hawke) is a former fighter pilot turned Vegas-based drone controller, beginning to unravel from the brutality of his daily routine. Hawke is on fine form and the always-thoughtful Niccol grapples with the complexities, but an overwhelmingly melodramatic final act plays like it was written by a committee of studio screenwriters.

Oh (Parsons) is part of an alien race who've colonised Earth by decanting humans to amusement parks in Australia, but he's forced to team up with lost little girl Tip (Rihanna). A grating experience, thanks to a confusing and uninteresting story, wall-to-wall Rihanna songs, twee dialogue and Parsons' annoyingly whiny voice.

Horror prequel focusing on Elise (Shaye), a spiritual investigator who encounters a grieving teenager (Scott) being menaced by an evil spirit. Writer/director Whannell builds tension effectively but while it's an improvement on the second film in the franchise, it's not as good as the original.

Dino-geek Gray (Simpkins) visits Jurassic Park with brother Zach (Robinson); the park's manager, their aunt Claire (Howard), is less than attentive until a new creation runs amok and raptor wrangler Owen (Pratt) steps in. Despite a merely functional screenplay, it has enough scares, scale, ideas and variety to keep everyone entertained.

Luke (Eastwood) is a North Carolina bull rider who forms a relationship with arts graduate Sophia (Robertson), who then rescue elderly Ira (Alda) from a burning car. It's a Nicholas Sparks movie; when Luke teaches Sophia to ride his mechanical bull, 'mechanical bull' is pretty much the size of it.

Mike (Tatum) takes a weekend away from his business to join his stripper buddies on a road trip to … a stripping convention. Winning blend of male bonding and female fantasy, with the men much more likable than most all-male comedy ensembles. As sweet and steamy as fresh cherry pie.

Prequel to the Despicable Me films, in which the pill-shaped, dungaree-sporting critters attach themselves to villain Scarlett Overkill (Bullock) and go to London to steal the Crown Jewels. The minions are as cute as ever but they seem funnier in support, and Bullock's character is one-dimensional.

The Overnight

Emily (Schilling) and Alex (Scott), new to LA, go to dinner with confident Kurt (Schwartzman), and his wife (Godrèche); after the kids have been put to bed, things turn awkwardly fruity. Painfully funny and brilliantly performed, forcing the audience and the central duo through a gauntlet of sometimes spectacular excruciation; deliciously squirm-inducing, if somewhat superficial.

  • Cast: Anna Kendrick, Skylar Astin, Anna Camp, Brittany Snow, Rebel Wilson, Ester Dean, Alexis Knapp, Hana Mae Lee, Adam DeVine, Kelley Jakle, Chrissie Fit, Hailee Steinfeld, Katey Sagal, Elizabeth Banks

After a catastrophic wardrobe malfunction at the White House, the Barden Bellas attempt to get their groove back in a Eurovision-like song contest. Despite highlights such as Lee's brilliantly weird performance as Lilly, the knowing charm of the original is diluted and Wilson's schtick, in particular, is starting to grate.

An LA Search & Rescue pilot's ex-wife and her new man take his daughter to San Francisco. Meanwhile, in another part of the film, science guys are acting worried. Disaster movie! Johnson is great company, the supporting cast is fun and although the timing of the release is unfortunate, it's tremendously entertaining earthquake-based tosh.

Funny, exciting and genuinely ambitious spy spoof with an appealing performance from McCarthy, and Byrne exceptional as the arrogant villainess. Hugely likable.
