Crazy Rich Asians

Crazy Rich Asians

  • 12A
  • Directed by: Jon M Chu
  • Cast: Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh

When Chinese-American college professor Rachel (Wu) meets the family of boyfriend Nick (Golding), she discovers that they’re incredibly rich. A fairly stale star-crossed lovers’ story is refreshed by a cast of East Asian stars and entertaining local colour.

The House with a Clock in its Walls

The House with a Clock in its Walls
  • 2018

  • 1h 44min
  • PG
  • Directed by: Eli Roth
  • Cast: Cate Blanchett, Jack Black, Owen Vaccaro

Lewis (Vaccaro) is an orphan sent to live with his mysterious uncle Jonathan (Black). Roth takes a break from gore to turn this children’s book into family fare, and it’s atmospheric, but lacks charm; still, Black is great casting and the themes of grief and bravery are handled well.

The King of Thieves

The King of Thieves
  • 2018
  • UK
  • Directed by: James Marsh
  • Cast: Michael Caine, Charlie Cox, Michael Gambon

Brian (Caine) is an octogenarian gangster who puts together a team of old codgers to rob the Hatton Garden diamond vaults. The biggest and flashiest of the four versions so far of this story has lots of star power but a boring script, dislikeable characters and colourless direction. Pointless and disappointing.

  • Directed by: Ol Parker
  • Cast: Christine Baranski, Jessica Keenan Wynn, Julie Walters, Alexa Davies, Pierce Brosnan, Jeremy Irvine, Colin Firth, Hugh Skinner, Stellan Skarsgård, Josh Dylan, Cher, Dominic Cooper, Andy García

Sequel to the feel-good ABBA musical Mamma Mia! Despite its absurdities and shoe-horning of ABBA songs, at its heart is a touching mother-daughter love story and an irresistible esprit de corps.

Mile 22

Mile 22
  • 2018

  • Directed by: Peter Berg
  • Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Lauren Cohan, John Malkovich, Ronda Rousey, Iko Uwais

James Silva (Wahlberg) leads a crack CIA team to transport a government witness who's been targeted for assassination. Much double-crossing, fistfights and absurd technobabble, and while Wahlberg is over-intense, the physical stuff is well-handled by Rousey and Uwais. Straight-up, boneheaded action.

The Nun

The Nun

  • Directed by: Corin Hardy
  • Cast: Bonnie Aarons, Taissa Farmiga, Charlotte Hope

Two Vatican investigators and a local (Bichir, Farmiga and Bloquet) arrive at a cloistered Romanian abbey in 1952 to investigate a nun’s suicide. The latest in the Conjuring series is the weakest, with Aarons playing nun demon Valak to the hilt but ultimately let down by overstated shocks and erratic plotting.

The Predator

The Predator
  • 2018
  • US
  • 1h 47min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Shane Black
  • Cast: Boyd Holbrook, Olivia Munn, Trevante Rhodes, Keegan-Michael Key, Sterling K. Brown, Jacob Tremblay, Yvonne Strahovski, Alfie Allen, Thomas Jane

A Predator comes to Earth, pursued by others of his kind, and humans are caught in the middle. Black’s reboot of the franchise lacks his usual vim, there are too many set pieces with no time to engage, and there’s next to no tension. It’s neither visceral enough for the fans, nor engaging enough for the rest of us.

A Simple Favour

A Simple Favour
  • 2018
  • US
  • 1h 57min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Paul Feig
  • Cast: Blake Lively, Anna Kendrick, Henry Golding

Stephanie (Kendrick), a mild-mannered suburban mom, tries to track down her friend Emily (Lively) after she mysteriously disappears. A twisty tale of murder, scheming and scams with excellent work from the two leads and the rest of the cast; a deliciously outrageous cocktail of a movie.

A Star is Born

A Star is Born
  • 2018
  • US
  • 2h 15min
  • 15
  • Directed by: Bradley Cooper
  • Cast: Lady Gaga, Bradley Cooper, Sam Elliott

Jackson (Cooper) is a famous musician, his best years behind him, who discovers young singer Ally (Gaga) in a bar one night. What could have been yet another remake is a revelation: Gaga sings up a storm and is nuanced and convincing, but Cooper is extraordinary as co-writer, producer, director and star. Smart, funny and heartbreaking.
