A good premise quickly turns crass and unfunny; Cardellini is wasted in an underwritten role and a single, lazy, sexist joke is spread over 96 forgettable minutes.

  • 2009

  • 2h 33min
  • 12A
  • Directed by: David Yates
  • Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson

While the sixth installment in the Harry Potter franchise does venture into darker, more adult areas than its predecessors it also injects more humour and character development than previous encounters, which doesn't always make for a satisfying concoction. Yates picks up in the aftermath of a spectacular attack on London by Death Eaters and builds towards the death of a key character that will pre-empt the final confrontation between Harry and Lord Voldemort in two-part finale, The Deathly Hallows.

With Harry's fifth return to Hogwarts comes the realisation that Voldemort's return to power is not the only factor that will trouble him and he is forced to confront a different force that matches his growing pains. Rowling's most complex and uneven book has proven to be the most difficult to adapt. Missing the talents of a big name director this still contains some enjoyable moments courtesy of newcomer Imelda Staunton, playing the latest Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher. Sadly exposition over action is this film's real undoing.

The Lion King

The photorealistic version of the beloved Disney story has memorable visuals, impressive set-pieces and adorable yet credible animals, but precisely because they’re so realistic, it’s weird when they speak and even stranger when they sing. All the star voices in the world don’t count when you can’t simulate heart and soul.

Lee Abbott (Krasinski), his wife Evelyn (Blunt), son (Jupe) and deaf daughter (Simmonds) live and work in an empty dystopian world in complete silence, hiding from creatures who hunt by sound. Krasinski's third film as director is a smart, weird sci-fi frightener that is beautifully simple but thoughtfully composed.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker

Emperor Palpatine (McDiarmid) is back and building an army, so Rey (Ridley), Poe (Isaac), Finn (Boyega) and the gang go up against him and Kylo Ren (Driver). The internal and external battle of Ridley and Driver is the strongest element, with magnetic chemistry, but elsewhere it’s disappointing fan service, a film that loses its nerve.
