HAODS presents Follies

It’s 1971 and thirty years after their last performance at the famous Weismann Theatre the Follies beauties of years gone by reunite for a show stopping evening of Broadway glitz and glamour, before the Theatre, and former home, is torn down.In this shabby yet sparkling atmosphere of bittersweet nostalgia, the glamourous icons of the roaring 20’s, breath-taking tap dancers of the 30’s and haunting harmony singers of the 40’s laugh, cry, reminisce and boast as they perform the fabulous musical numbers which made them famous, trailed by the ghostly memories of their younger selves. Against this volatile atmosphere of drunken remembrances, a decades-old love quadrangle receives a revival when Follies dancers Sally and Phyllis, and their husbands, Buddy and Ben meet again. Follies is a loving and brilliant pastiche of show music, full of glorious dance routines and big band numbers it delivers fascinating peek into this by-gone era, and a clear-eyed look at the transformation of relationships over time. This award winning musical by Sondheim (and recent hit at the National Theatre) should not be missed!

National Theatre Live: King Lear

National Theatre Live King Lear By William Shakespeare ★★★★★ ‘Ian McKellen reigns supreme in this triumphant production.’ (Daily Telegraph) Broadcast live from London’s West End, see Ian McKellen’s ‘extraordinarily moving portrayal’ (Independent) of King Lear in cinemas. Chichester Festival Theatre’s production received five-star reviews for its sell-out run, and transfers to the West End for a limited season. Jonathan Munby directs this ‘nuanced and powerful’ (The Times) contemporary retelling of Shakespeare’s tender, violent, moving and shocking play. Considered by many to be the greatest tragedy ever written, King Lear sees two ageing fathers – one a King, one his courtier – reject the children who truly love them. Their blindness unleashes a tornado of pitiless ambition and treachery, as family and state are plunged into a violent power struggle with bitter ends.

National Theatre Live: The Madness of George III

The Madness of George III by Alan Bennett Multi-award-winning drama The Madness of George III will be broadcast live to cinemas, in National Theatre Live’s first ever broadcast from Nottingham Playhouse. Written by one of Britain’s best-loved playwrights Alan Bennett (The History Boys, The Lady in the Van), this epic play was also adapted into a BAFTA Award-winning film following its premiere on stage in 1991. The cast of this new production includes Olivier Award-winners Mark Gatiss (Sherlock, Wolf Hall, NT Live Coriolanus) in the title role, and Adrian Scarborough (Gavin and Stacey, Upstairs Downstairs, After the Dance). It’s 1786 and King George III is the most powerful man in the world. But his behaviour is becoming increasingly erratic as he succumbs to fits of lunacy. With the King’s mind unravelling at a dramatic pace, ambitious politicians and the scheming Prince of Wales threaten to undermine the power of the Crown, and expose the fine line between a King and a man. Nick Heyward: Woodland Echoes Tour

Following the release of his critically acclaimed new album ‘Woodland Echoes’ that entered at No. 4 in the independent album charts, Nick Heyward has announced a UK tour for 2018. The tour takes in 12 dates starting on 24th May at the Brighton Concorde and culminating on 6th July at Milton Keynes The Stables. Nick is set to release a new single, ‘Perfect Sunday Sun’, on 17th November again via his own label Gladsome Hawk.

His recent live set at this year’s Great Escape Festival praised by Drowned In Sound as “one of the finest we heard all weekend, his second coming is imminent” and his recent full band headline show at 229 received rave reviews by the likes of Metro.

‘Woodland Echoes’, his first record in 18 years, “can't be called a return to form for Heyward because he never lost his form; it just went unheard for years,” as written by All Music within the full star’s review. “Call it a welcome return instead, because the world of pop music always needs music this smart, tuneful, and unabashedly romantic.” Nick Heyward – as perfectly described by Louder Than War is still “a songwriter of the highest order.”

Prior to his hugely successful and prolific solo career, Nick came to prominence as the frontman of percolating pop-funk new wave group Haircut 100, a foundational part of the 80s-pop explosion. They released four UK Top 10 hit singles, with their debut album ‘Pelican West’ reaching no. 2 in the UK album charts, no. 31 in USA’s Billboard 200, and ending up being certified platinum by BPI, with Nick gracing the cover of pacesetting style magazine The Face.

The Opera House

The Opera House, a new film by award-winning documentary filmmaker Susan Froemke, surveys a remarkable period of the Metropolitan Opera’s rich history and a time of great change for New York. Featuring rarely seen archival footage, stills, recent interviews, and a soundtrack of extraordinary Met performances, the film chronicles the creation of the Met’s storied home of the last 50 years, against the backdrop of the artists, architects, and politicians who shaped the cultural life of New York City in the ’50s and ’60s. Among the notable figures in the film are famed soprano Leontyne Price, who opened the new Met in 1966 in Samuel Barber’s Antony and Cleopatra; Rudolf Bing, the Met’s imperious General Manager, who engineered the move from the old house to the new one; Robert Moses, the unstoppable city planner who bulldozed an entire neighborhood to make room for Lincoln Center; and Wallace Harrison, whose quest for architectural glory was never fully realized.

Wisdom of a Fool

Star of 1950s British stage and screen, the legendary Norman Wisdom packed houses across the UK, won the hearts of millions and remains one of the UK’s comedy icons. The world of post-war Music Hall and Variety embraced his trademark manic slapstick routine and catapulted him to stardom. Over the years he perfected an act that would go on to shape his unique style; his cloth cap, ill-fitting suit and classic underdog character leading Charlie Chaplin to describe him as his ‘favourite clown’. Success on the silver screen including the hit song Don’t Laugh at Me sealed his fame. But, as ever, fame came at a price… Portraying thirty characters in this tour de force performance, Jack Lane takes you on an emotional roller coaster, revealing the man – and the extraordinary talent – behind the Gump costume. The Gump costume that features in the play belonged to Norman himself and has been generously loaned to the production by his son and daughter, Nicholas and Jacqueline Wisdom.
